Obituary of Violet H. Miller

Violet H. Miller, 91 of Iowa City died Sunday, June 7, 2009, at the Iowa City Care and Rehabilitation Center. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 14, 2009, at the First Christian Church in Coralville, where a visitation will be after 9:00 a.m. until services. Burial has taken place at the Garrett Cemetery near Delta, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her memory. Violet Hazel Chapman Miller was born March 19, 1918, in What Cheer, Iowa the daughter of Walter and Jennie Pearl (Junkins) Chapman. She graduated from What Cheer High School in 1936. She later received her B.A. in Teaching from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She spent a career in teaching, from the rural schools near Keokuk, in Gladbrook, and most of her career at English Valley Schools in Kinross. Following retirement she did substitute teaching and tutoring in Keswick and Sigourney. She was united in marriage to Rolland Miller on July 30, 1963 in Webster, Iowa where they lived on a Century Farm. Following his death in 1970 she moved to North English where she lived until moving to Iowa City in 1991. Here in Iowa City she was member of the First Christian Church, Voices of Experience, Sara Hart Ladies Aid, volunteered at the Veterans Administration Hospital, and with the Salvation Army. She was a member of I.S.E.A., N.E.A., and Iowa Retired School Personnel Association. Her family includes a son and his wife, Edward and Jean Allgood of Iowa City; daughter and her husband, Ann and Don Popham of North English; Rolland’s descendants, Connie (Burrell) Gardner of Toledo, IA; Suzanne (Robert) Moffit 0f North English; Coleen (Larry) McArtor of Fairfield, IA; Philip (Connie) Miller of Fairfield, IA; Max (Tracy) Miller of Wellman; and Dixie (Terry) Knake of Cedar Rapids; 6 grandchildren, 17 step grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 1 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Rolland; and step-son and his wife, Dick and Betty Miller. Violet’s family wishes to extend their most sincere thanks to all the staff at Iowa City Care & Rehabilitation Center for their most loving care of Violet over the years.
