Obituary of Michael D. Curry
Michael Delving Curry was born December 22, 1947, in Omaha, NE, the son of Reverend Joseph Curry and Louise Frances Longstreet Curry. He attended Hawthorne Elementary School in Waterloo, Iowa. He also attended South High and Tech High School located in Omaha, Nebraska. Michael also received a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work and a Masters degree in Sociology from the University of Northern Iowa. In 1978 he was the first black voice of KBBG and was a well known radio announcer in the Waterloo and Cedar Rapids area. He was the manager in training while working at the National Tea Company. Also, he was self-employed by hosting dances and skating parties and was very talented at skating on his roller skates. He married Marquita Phillips and they were later divorced but to this union were born two sons. He married Frances Levack in 1995 and they divorced in 2004. In January 2009, he moved back to Iowa City and was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He spent the last few months of his life with Frances and her two sons, Leroy and Avery. He died on July 9, 2009 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Michael confessed Christ at an early age and attended Antioch church as a youth. He later developed a relationship with Christ and would often have biblical discussions with his father. During his last few months here on earth, Michael was always found carrying his bible and studying the word. He is survived by his children, Warren, Dana, Amber, Shundelle, and Angela; his father, Rev. Joseph Curry; siblings, JoAnn Henry (Brian) of Waterloo, Gary D. Curry (Beverly) of Yuma, AZ, Billie Jo McCants of Waterloo, Sheila Hollingsworth (Juan) of Waterloo, Kathy Graves, Giselle Graves, and Delbert Graves all of St. Paul, MN, Lawrence T. Bryant of Cedar Rapids, Oliver Bryant (JoAnne) of Waterloo, Lynette McIntosh-Curry of Waterloo and Joel Curry; a host of grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews, and friends. Michael will be greatly missed by all who knew him and we will cherish the memories of the time spent with him.
