Obituary of William E. Chalmers

William “Bill or Doc” Edward Chalmers, 83 of Iowa City passed away Friday, February 5, 2010, at home with his family by his side, after a four year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bill’s memory to Iowa City Hospice or Mercy Foundation. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com Bill was born September 4, 1926, in Iowa City, the son of Dora Chalmers. Attending Iowa City Schools he graduated with the Class of 1944 from City High School. He married Julia Grace on June 19, 1949 in Tiffin, Iowa. Bill worked for the Iowa City Post Office for 30 years until his retirement in September, 1981. Bill was a member of the Hawkeye Kennel Club, past 4-H Leader, National Guard and a long time member of the Eagles. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes as well as working on his small acreage and helping with the dog kennel. His family includes his wife of sixty years, Julia; daughter Sue Schaefer of Williamsburg, Iowa, and her children, Quinn, Lindsey, Lucas (Katie) and Evan; son, William F. Chalmers of North Hollywood, California, and his children, Colin and Anna; half-brother, Dean (Ida) Shannon of Marion, Iowa; sister and brothers-in-law, Bob and Mary Ellen Edwards of Iowa City, John and Betty Grace of Tiffin, Iowa and Robert Grace of Washington State; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother; mother and father-in-law, Doris and Francis Grace; halfbrother, John Shannon; son-in-law, Joel Schaefer and daughter-in-law, Sheila Chalmers.
