Condolences
Thelma provided critical medical care helping me survive whopping cough as an
infant at Hanlontown. She was baptism sponsor for me and her kindness and caring nature was demonstrated by her visits to Hanlontown during my youth.
My sympathy in sorrow after Thelma's death. She was on friendly visit to the old country long ago. Norwegian: Min medflelse i sorgen etter Thelma's bortgang. Hun var på hyggelig besk i gamlelandet for lenge siden. Klem fra Ingvald.
I had the pleasure of knowing Thelma through the VOSH organization - what a wonderful lady! Thelma and Phil will both remain I my thoughts! My prayers go out to Thelma's family and friends!
George and I were saddened to hear of your loss but we will be unable to attend the visitation or the service due to being on the road, coming back to IA from TX. Thelma was such a special lady with a smile and hugs if you cared to imbibe, waiting for everyone she met. May the Lord bless you and fill the void in your lives with His comfort and love. Dear Mark, Paul & Kathy,
Sending my thoughts and prayers to you all. It seems like yesterday we lived on First Avenue. Thelma was always so nice and such a warm, welcoming presence for me. My condolences to you all and your families.
I am sorry for your loss, you are in everyone's thoughts and prayers!
Being a servant means serving without being thanked or recognized. It often entails giving and going unnoticed, being tired and not rested, sorrowful and not comforted. Servanthood by its very nature implies working behind the scenes, and it always demands quiet reliability on the part of the servant.
Thelma (and Philip) will inherit reward for serving the Lord Christ by giving and serving others.
I have very fond memories of visiting Aunt Thelma and Uncle Phil. There was a magic at the house in Iowa city. I remember Aunt Thelma serving liver and my best friend Pugsly eating it under the table for me. Fireflies, Blind Man's Bluff, the laundry shoot, and trips to the Hi-V are embedded in my memory! Aunt Thelma always had a warm smile and an enchanting laugh. My thoughts and prayers go out to my cousins - may the peace of knowing that your mom is in the arms of The Savior give you comfort. Love Tina
Mark, Paul, Kathy and families, I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Thelma was always a main stay at Bible studies, worship and special events. She always made me laugh because she would say, "Now if I talk too much you just tell me" and Phil would smile and shake his head. I remember visiting them in Williamsburg and hearing about their trips to help people with their sight in Mexico, etc. She is a lovely lady in my memory...God bless you all.
Hi, Mark--When I saw the notice of your mom's passing, thoughts of you immediately came to mind. I want you to know that you and your family have been on my mind today and in my prayers that The God Of All Comfort will make His love ever so real to you and your family. And may His presence bring peace to your hearts in the midst of your grief.
I can't believe that over 38 years have passed since you (and my son, Jim) were my students at Kirkwood. What great memories I have of my years there!
My hope for you is that your family will find joy now and in the days ahead as you share wonderful memories of your mom.
Sincerely,
Dave Popelka
Thelma was a very nice woman that I met when she was a member of First Lutheran church in Conroy. She and Phil were a great couple. I remember she wanted to get to Iowa City to have cards and coffee with her friends. Family thought she shouldn't drive in Iowa City so I told her I would take her. What a wonderful day we had. Blessings to your family as she and Phil reunite in Heaven. Darlene Morrison
My sister-in-law, Thelma had such a caring, hospitable way about her. She always made such a tremendous effort to add special touches when you came to see her. More than once, she offered to watch our young kids so Bev and I could travel for one of my conventions and get a few days to ourselves which was a source of refreshment. I specifically remember a time when the kids were grown and Thelma and Phil treated us to a wonderful picnic outing at a beautiful Iowa lake and a sunset to marvel at.
Beverly always enjoyed looking at the antiques and Norwegian treasures that tastefully decorated the Hottel home. She always admired her big sister. Thelma is just one of those ladies who made you feel special and thankful to be around her. She will be missed. Dale
