Obituary of Andrew A. Plank

Andrew Plank, 40 of North Liberty died Saturday, May 29, 2010, at his home from complications of ALS. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church in North Liberty with the Reverend Alecia Williams officiating. Following services there will be a time to visit with Andrew's family at the church. Family graveside services will be held at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. Andrew Alan Plank was born June 20, 1969, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Charles and Connie (Scotton) Plank. Following graduation from Columbus Community High School in 1987, he graduated with a degree in computer science from the University of Iowa in 1991. He was united in marriage to Susan Lynne Boyington on October 11, 1997, in Marshalltown. They were blessed with two children, Zachary in 2000, and Brennan in 2002. The couple lived in Marshalltown where he worked as a computer programmer for MICA. In 2000, the couple and their family moved to the Iowa City area where Andrew worked with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as a computer programmer. He continued to work for more than a year after he was diagnosed with ALS in September of 2005. He enjoyed music, singing and playing guitar. He was a member of the St. Paul's Saturday Night Gospel Singers at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama while he was living in Marshalltown. Andrew was a lifelong baseball enthusiast-he collected baseball cards as a youth and more recently competed in fantasy baseball leagues. He also participated in fantasy football leagues. But most important and dear to his heart was his family-he took pride in his two boys and loved playing with them. He was also devoted to his wife, Susan. He fought the disease boldly and vigorously to be with them as long as he could. In addition to Susan, Zachary and Brennan; other family includes his parents, Charles and Connie Plank of Columbus Junction, IA; sister, Jodie Morin and her children, Emma and Katherine of Storm Lake; brother, Shawn and Susan Patterson Plank and their children Sam and Tom of Urbandale, IA; Susan's parents, George and Sally Boyington of Clarion; sisters-in-law, Diane Maxwell (Bruce) and their children, Chelsea and Kevin of Ames; and Deb Ewing (Tom) and their children, Ryan and Amy of Lineville, IA. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Ben Morin.
