Tony was born November 19, 1937, in Whitehall, WI the only son of Roland P. and Dorothy N. (Senty) Frey. Following graduation from high school in Whitehall in 1955, he attended and received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls in 1959. Continuing his education he received his Master's in 1960, and his Ph.D. in 1966 both from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in Chemical Engineering. In later years he attended the University of Iowa in the College of Medicine.
On February 8, 1964, he was united in marriage to Constance M. "Connie" Kling. Tony began his professional career as a chemical engineer for Dow Chemical, then as an assistant professor at Iowa State University, followed by a 6-month Fulbright Scholarship in Norway. Returning to the United States he continued his research and teaching in Engineering at Colorado State University. After leaving engineering, he pursued several career opportunities over the years. He worked as a research assistant in Anesthesia at the University of Iowa, a unit clerk at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and Mercy Hospital, served as a substitute teacher for the Iowa City Community Schools, worked at Proctor & Gamble, delivered newspapers, and scored exams for both ACT and Pearson. But one occupation that he enthusiastically pursued throughout his life was farming his forests in Wisconsin.
Some might describe Tony as eccentric; but he was blessed with a creative mind, a remarkable memory, and a giving spirit. His passions in life included boating, music, photography, Hawkeye sports, and travels near and far; in fact he drove his 2004 Toyota Prius Hybrid to every state in the continental United States, and it is still going strong after 271,000 miles. He embraced technology and education in today's world, and was truly a life-long student. But through all of this, his family was by far his most cherished piece of the puzzle he called life. In his last days, his thoughts were turned to the legacy that he would leave behind; his family is living testament to this legacy.
Survivors include his wife, Connie; children, Eric "Rick" Frey of Mt. Vernon; Laura Frey Law (Ian Law) and their children, Erika and Kelsey Law of Iowa City; Steven Frey (Lisa Frey) and their children, David, Raema, Jonathan, Naomi and Selah Frey of Kosovo; and Katie (Frey) Schroeder (Derick Schroeder) and their children, Nyle and Peyton Schroeder of Iowa City.
Tony always appreciated the excellent health care available in the Iowa City community, including the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Mercy Hospital, and most recently, Hospice of Iowa City.
