Obituary of Joanne Ruth Shaffer

Joanne R. Shaffer, 76 of Iowa City died Thursday, September 02, 2010, at the Hills Atrium Village. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 5, 2010, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, where visitation will be after 1 pm until the services. Private family graveside services will take place at Memory Gardens at a later time. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Joanne’s memory to Iowa City Hospice. Online condolences may be sent for her family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Joanne Ruth Zwicki was born April 24, 1934, in Iowa City the daughter of Emil J. and Stella (Jones) Zwicki. She married Dwight H. Shaffer on August 12, 1953. For a number of years she worked as an invoice clerk at Moore Business Forms, and for nearly twenty years as a nurse’s aide at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Joanne was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City. She enjoyed life, camping, traveling, crocheting, gardening, canning, and cooking for her family. In fact, nothing came before her family, especially after her grandson, Nicholas was born. He was the twinkle in his grandmother’s eye! Her family includes her husband, Dwight; sons and their wives, Kevin and Karen Shaffer and their son, Nicholas of Iowa City; and Gary and Teresa Shaffer of West Branch; her brother, James Zwicki of Hiawatha; and her sister, Gladys Nugent. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law, Bessie Zwicki.
