Obituary of Robert E. Zeithamel

Robert "Bob" Zeithamel, 85 of Tiffin, formerly of rural Iowa City and Wellman died Thursday, October 21, 2010, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, October 25, 2010, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and again following the services at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made in Bob's memory to the Preucil School of Music c/o Endowed Scholarship Fund. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Bob was born September 6, 1925, in Iowa City the son of William F. and Elsie A. (Sass) Zeithamel. He attended University High School in Iowa City. During the Korean Conflict, Bob served in the United States Army. Bob was married to Dorothy Krenz; he later married Barbara Treptow December 20, 1971. He had lived in this area for many years, farming since he was a teenager and working as a rural mail carrier for many years. Following retirement he and Barb moved to Buena Vista, Colorado where they lived until returning to this area. Bob was known for his love of horses, having been a member of PEROI, this group rode horseback from Iowa City to Des Moines raising money for Camp Sunnyside. He was in the Mounted Patrol of the Johnson County Sheriff's Department for many years, involved in searches, parades and parking for the fair and other functions. Later in life he learned to fly, getting his pilot license at the Leadville, Colorado airport, 1 month before his first social security check! Bob enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, shooting, snow skiing, four wheeling, and so much more, you couldn't keep this man down. Bob so loved spending time with his friends and family which includes his wife, Barbara; son and his wife, Douglas and Sonja Zeithamel of Iowa City; grandsons, Brad Zeithamel and his wife, Marcia; and Tim and his wife, Rachel Zeithamel; great grandsons, Adam and Seth Zeithamel. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, William and Richard. Bob's family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff at the University of Iowa Hospitals who so compassionately cared for Bob and our family.
