Obituary of Donald D. Winter

His family includes his wife of over fifty-one years, Donna; daughter and her husband, Deb and Pat Seemuth of Iowa City; son and his wife, David and Sheila Winter of Lawrenceburg, IN; daughter, Diana Winter of Lafayette, IN; son and his friend, Doug Winter and Carmen Miller of Iowa City; son and his friend, Daniel Winter and Susan Schellin of Iowa City; grandchildren, Devin Seemuth, Taylor Seemuth, Jordan Winter, and Joseph Winter all of Iowa City; and brother and his wife, Wayne and Zola Winter of Iowa City. Don was preceded in death by a brother, Cyril Winter and a sister, Bernice Hansen. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the United States Army. Donald was born December 31, 1929, in Iowa City the son of Daniel and Marie (Mooney) Winter. He graduated from St. Patrick’s High School. On October 18, 1950, he married Donna D. Pohler at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, where he has been a member all of his life. Don has enjoyed many occupations having worked in sales and insurance, he had been a chef in several local restaurants, and until his retirement in 1994, he worked for many years at the University of Iowa. For all those that knew Don, you knew his love for his family, his woodworking projects, and his love for baseball. Don has been active in the local Babe Ruth organization, coaching hundreds of area youth, serving as District Commissioner, Associate State Commissioner and Secretary on the Midwest Plains Region Babe Ruth Board and a member of the Babe Ruth Umpire Association.. From his commitment to youth, he was inducted into the Iowa Babe Ruth Hall of Fame. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Don’s memory.
