Obituary of Tom apos;Pickle&apos Herring

His family includes his wife Michelle and daughter Alexandria of Oxford, Sisters: Winifred Sanford of Fort Madison, Carlene and husband Clifford Shafer of Rome, Iowa, Francis Lee Winegar of La Mesa, California, mother and father in-law Larry and Linda Burgett of Newton, Iowa, Sister in-law Nicolle and husband Shawn Hornberg and children Tanner and Kurtlyn Sandrock of Boone, Iowa, brother in-law Brad Burgett of Newton, Iowa, nephew Bill and wife Barb Shafer of Rudd, Iowa and his companion and friend Tatum his German Shepard. Tom’s family would like to thank his friends Steve and Gina Henkelman of Oxford His parents and nephew Robert Graf preceded him in death. Tomas J. Herring was born on September 17, 1953 in Fort Madison, Iowa the son of John and Rose Sandbothe Herring. He attended Fort Madison Schools and Burlington Community College. Tom worked as a correction officer for the State of Iowa at the Fort Madison Penitentiary and for the last nine years at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center, Oakdale Campus in Coralville. In March of this year he started his twenty second year as a correction officer. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin where he served in varies capacities, including past chairman of the administrative board. He was involved with youth groups and senior services at the church and with sporting activities within the community. At one time he served as president of the AFSCME Union #2985. His family and friends will remember his kind and genuine nature, his love for animals especially his dog Tatum. He had a wonderful sense of humor and never met a stranger and loved to talk with anyone. Tom loved and cherished his daughter Alex who was the love of his life. Memorials may be given to the Tom Herring memorial fund for Alex’s future endeavors.
