Obituary of Dorothy A. Rasley

Her family includes her husband, Robert A. Rasley; sons and their wives, Robert A. and Donna Rasley of North Liberty, and Michael and Dell Rasley of Coralville; six grandchildren, Sara, Alicia, Ryan, Rynae, Rachelle, and Jessica; two brothers and their wives, Jack and Peg Ruschmeyer of Abilene, TX and Phillip and Jackie Ruschmeyer of Manatosh, WI; sister-in-law, June Rasley of Des Moines. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Jerry and Max Ruschmeyer, a sister, Virginia Wilson, an infant son, and a brother in infancy. Dorothy Alice Rasley was born March 3, 1930 in Boone, Iowa the youngest of seven children to Henry and Cecil (McClaine) Ruschmeyer. She graduated from Boone High School, and later from the University of Iowa College of Nursing in 1951. She married Robert A. Rasley on September 5, 1953 here in Iowa City. She began her career in health care in 1951 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, a career that spanned over forty years in which she held various leadership roles in the hospital. Her last number of years before her retirement in 1992, she spent as Senior Nurse Epidemiologist in the Department of Epidemiology. During her time at the University and after in her retirement she served as a consultant and training nurse in the field of infection control for hospitals and nursing homes in the United States and also in Europe and Russia. The Dorothy A. Rasley Award was established in her name in recognition of her work and achievements this field. In the year of 2000, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award for Service from the University Of Iowa College Of Nursing. She was a member of a number of professional organizations and a member of the University of Iowa Presidents Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her memory to the University of Iowa College of Nursing Scholarship Fund through the University of Iowa Foundation.
