Edelgard Ede Katherine Ebert was born March 27, 1915 in Waterloo, IA to the late Frederick and Augusta (Manske) Steinberg. She grew up in Iowa City where she attended high school and the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA graduating with a nursing degree in 1935.
Ede was united in marriage to S. John Ebert on October 21, 1939 in Iowa City, IA where the couple made their home. She was an excellent athlete who with her husband, John, won numerous doubles tennis tournaments in eastern Iowa and the central Midwest from 1937 through 1946. With John, she helped found and was past Vice President of the Iowa Mountaineers, a University of Iowa Club that climbed mountains world wide. She climbed many of the highest mountains in the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa, Alaska, Peru and New Zealand. Notable peaks include the Grand Teton, Matterhorn, Jungfrau, Kilimanjaro, and 19,000 foot plus peaks in Peru. Ede was the first women to do the grand traverse of Mt. Sir Donald in British Columbia, Canada and the north face wall of the Triglauf in Yugoslavia. She was a life member elected to membership in the American Alpine Club in 1951. She toured the Travelogue Lecture circuit with her husband for over 25 years from 1960 to 1984 helping photograph and present six different travelogues about her travels in communities nation wide, including many in Minnesota. Ede had a strong faith in Jesus Christ which helped her accept the extreme physical limitations of a stroke that affected her the last 20 years of her life. After the death of her husband in 1996, she moved from Iowa City, IA, where she had raised her family, to Little Falls, MN, where she then lived with her son, John, and family with Linda as her caregiver.
