Obituary of Wayne J. Winter

Wayne J. Winter, age 69 of Iowa City passed away, Monday, December 29, 2003, at the Greenwood Manor Care Center following a long illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with the Reverend James Vrba officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm today at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, where a parish vigil service will be said at 7pm. Wayne was born May 19, 1934 in Iowa City the son of Daniel and Marie (Mooney) Winter. He graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1952. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the United States Army. On June 22, 1957, he married Zola Tharp at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church where he has been a lifetime member. Wayne had a few occupations, but his love for Law Enforcement was his true passion. From protecting the community of Iowa City as a Detective to becoming the Chief of Police for Coralville, working as the security supervisor for Mercy Hospital, and retiring from Hartwig Motors. His family includes his wife, Zola, three daughters, Regina Feltz and her husband, Benny of Kalona, Sheryl Fitzjarrell and her husband, Joe of St. Peters, MO, and Betty “Lou” Winter of Iowa City; one son, Chief Warrant Officer John Winter of Richland, MO; and five grandchildren, Dan Kasper and his wife, Michelle, Bobbie Jo Kasper, Ashley Jo Winter, Samantha Fitzjarrell, and Jared Feltz. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Cyril and Don Winter, and one sister, Beatrice Hansen.
