Obituary of Fredrick E. Fluegel, Jr.

Frederick E. Fluegel Jr. age 81 of 2801 Hwy 6 East Iowa City died on Sunday, January 11, 2004 following a brief illness at the Ocala Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City, burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorials donations in Fred’s name may be given to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and sent to the University of Iowa Foundation at P.O. Fred was born on January 29, 1922 in Cedar Rapids the son of Frederick E. and Lorena Adams Fluegel Sr. He graduated from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids and served in the Coast Guard during WWII. Fred was an entrepreneur through out his life. He started and owned many business including Iowa City Adjustment Company and Credit Bureau, the Manpower Office in Iowa City, Iowa City Telephone Answer Exchange, Sugar Bottom Stables, the Coralville Courier, West Liberty Hotel along with numerous business in Florida. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, The Elks lodge in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City , the University of Iowa Athletic Club, past president of Iowa City Lions Club and a founding member of the Iowa City Polo Club. Fred owned many race horses through out his life, they were his passion. His family said it best “Fred had no strangers in his life, only people he had never met.” He is survived by his wife Betty of Iowa City, daughter, Karen and husband, LeRoy Dawson of Solon, son, Tim and wife, Julie Taylor of Iowa City, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one niece, three nephews, a brother, Dave Fluegel of Arizona along with Betty’s seven children their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Ted, Bill, first wife Nadine and second wife Thelma Sybil.
