Ada Maxine (Strait) Chance was born May 14, 1916, in Hamburg, Iowa the daughter of Jacob and Mabel (Brainard) Strait. She attended Pomeroy School near her home until graduating from the eighth grade. She then moved to Hamberg to attend high school, living with Grandma and Grampa Strait. After graduating from high school in May of 1933 at the age of sixteen, she stayed on the farm for two years, helping her beloved dad with farm work during some of the worst of the Great Depression. Maxine entered the Nurses Training Program at the Hamburg Hospital on March 5, 1935. On July 29, 1937, she married Jesse W. Chance in Sidney. She worked as a nurse for fifty years, retiring on March 5, 1985 for the hospital which in later years became Grape Community Hospital. In addition to her nursing career, she raised her family and assisted her husband with their farm near Sidney, which she still lived lived independently until her recent illness. Maxine was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church, the Garden Club, and the rural Neighborhood Club. She loved her profession of nursing, it only seems fitting that she would die on the same day she started her career, and retired from the career that she loved. She enjoyed the outdoors, watching birds from her kitchen window, tending her garden, and working in the yard. But most important in her life was her family, throughout the years she always put them first. Her family includes two daughters and their husbands, Betty and Dr. Carroll Trewet of Atlantic, Iowa and Nancy and Mark Kedzior of Iowa City; seven grandchildren, J. Mitchell and his wife, Tami Trewet, Lauri and her husband, Rick Vance, Matthew Trewet, Michael and his wife, Lisa Trewet, Mark and his wife, Jodi Trewet, Kristi and her husband, Bernie Sams, and Jessica Kedzior; eleven great-grandchildren, Chance and Caroline Trewet, Jake and Drew Vance, Carter Trewet, Timmy and Jesse Trewet, Tyler And Emmie Trewet, Audrey Sams and Bernie Sams III. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jesse; sisters, Marjorie Buckner, Mazie Zimmerman, and Doris Williamson; and one brother, Fred “Bud” Strait.
