Obituary of Evadean apos;Dean&apos Van Dyke

Evadean Priscilla Dickey Van Dyke, known to all as Dean, died Wednesday June 2, 2004 at Oaknoll Retirement Residence at the age of 94. Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Oaknoll, with Father Peter Sanderson officiating. Parking is available on Oaknoll Drive or George Streets. Internment will be at Oakland Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Trinity Episcopal Church or Iowa City Hospice. Dean was born May 1, 1910 in Argos, Indiana, the daughter of a Howard Burl Dickey, a Church of the Brethren Minister and Effie Maude Dickey, a practical nurse. She graduated from Manchester College with a major in English. Her love of reading and creative writing was apparent all her life. She married Vernon Van Dyke on April 1, 1934. They lived most of their married life in Iowa City. Dean and her husband traveled extensively enjoying trips to Europe, Africa and Mexico. She loved entertaining and set a grand table. Her sense of humor was a joy to her friends. Although her home and family were her primary interest she was an artist in many media. She loved quilting, pottery, painting, hooking rugs, decorating and playing the piano. Her family includes her daughters, Joan Fouts and her husband Jim of Sylva, North Carolina and their son Jeff and his family of Tucson AZ; Marcia Shaffer and her husband, Richard of Iowa City and their two sons, Greg Shaffer and his wife Michelle of Iowa City and Brad and his family of Kissimmee, Florida; three great grandchildren; two brothers: James of South Bend IN and John of Knightstown, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister Margaret and her brother Galen.
