Obituary of Robert N. Alderman

Robert N. “Bob” Alderman, 81, longtime Iowa City area businessman, died Saturday, December 25, 2004, at Oaknoll Care Center in Iowa City. A gathering for family and friends will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2004, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Everyone is welcome. Family services will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Bob’s memory to Iowa City Hospice or the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center c/o The University of Iowa Foundation. Robert Newton Alderman, the son of Grover and Nell (Newton) Alderman, was born November 15, 1923, in Bloomington, Indiana. Following graduation from University High School in Iowa City, Bob served in the United States Navy during World War II. On December 30, 1947, Bob married Cora Clem in Davenport, Iowa. The next year he received his BSC degree from the University of Iowa. He became an Independent Insurance Agent, and was the owner of the Alderman-Wilson Insurance Agency before retiring after 42 years in the business. He served as State President and State National Director of the Independent Insurance Agents. Bob believed in community service and was active in many civic organizations throughout the years including the Elks Club, Optimist Club of Iowa City, for which he served as president, and was a member of The Presidents Club of the University of Iowa. Family was very important to Bob. His family includes his wife “Clem”; a son and his wife, John T. Alderman and Stephanie K. Hamilton of Iowa City and their daughter Mary Nell Alderman; daughters and their husbands, Barbara J. Acker and Mark of Hailey, Idaho, and Catherine A. Marie and Ken Norris of Raleigh, North Carolina; nieces Sue Benedix of Troy, Michigan and Beth Von Till of San Jose, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Bruce Warren Alderman, infant daughter, Virginia Nell Alderman, and an infant granddaughter, Rachel Lou Alderman. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service are caring for Bob’s family and his services.
