Hickman was born August 29, 1979 in Burlington, Iowa the son of David W. and Lynn M. (Strausser) Hickman. He was raised in Mediapolis, Iowa until their family moved to Fenton, Iowa while he was in high school, where he graduated from Sentral (Fenton) High School in 1997. He later graduated from MusicTech in St. Paul, MN. He has lived in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area for the past four to five years, where he worked as a programmer for Midiringtones in St. Paul. Those who knew this spirited young man knew his love for music, learning on his own to play guitar, piano, create music with friends and groups. Another part of Joel was his computer knowledge and technology obsession, he was good at this and he loved every minute of it. However, his greatest joy was raising his daughter, Aimee, he loved fatherhood. His family includes his daughter, Aimee Hickman and her mother, Alison Wiley of Minneapolis, MN; parents, David and Lynn Hickman of Aurelia, IA; sister, Jeanette Cornforth and her husband, Bryan of Kissimmee, FL; brother, Jon Hickman and his wife, Kahla of Maplegrove, MN; his niece, Chloe Hickman; grandmother, Vivian Hickman of Iowa City; and grandfather, Myrlin Strausser of North English, IA.
