Obituary of James D. Cone

James D. Cone, age 58, of 1022 Wyldgreen Road, Iowa City died Thursday January 27, 2005 at his home in Iowa City from a sudden illness. A visitation with family and friends will be held from 3 to 6 pm today at the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent in James’s name to the Iowa City Animal Shelter or the Childrens Hospital of Iowa Gift Fund. James was born December 5th, 1946 in Ithaca, New York to Scott and Genevieve Cone. After high school James attended a community college in New York and later moved to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa where he graduated in 1979. Before attending the University, in 1966 James was drafted to the Army and deployed to Vietnam where he specialized in power plant operations for almost two years. After settling into Iowa City he worked for the Department of Social Services at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. James was the Child Abuse Specialist for many years until a recent change to the General Surgery floor, helping children in need throughout his career. James also lived to teach others how to help others, as a professor at the University of Iowa’s School of Social Work. His family includes his sister JoAnne Smith, Nieces and their spouses Amy and Ronny Aiken and Dawn and David Pedraza. Great Nephews; Robert Aiken and Christopher and Alexander Pedraza. Great Nieces; Angel and Genevieve Pedraza and Amanda Aiken. James is preceded in death by his parents.
