Obituary of Louis Alvin Cox, Sr.

Louis Alvin Cox Sr. age 82 of rural Iowa City died Monday, April 25, 2005 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial with military honors will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Louis’s memory. Online condolences may be sent for his family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Louis Alvin Cox Sr. was born December 13, 1922, in Johnson County, Iowa the son of Roy G. and Florence A. (Stover) Cox. On May 15, 1943, he was united in marriage to Ruby “June” Stinson in Iowa City. During World War II Louis served his country in the United States Army. He served on the front in the 362 Infantry Regiment of the 91st. “Powder River” division of Company C as an automatic rifleman for 22 months. During this time, he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action in Italy, the Good Conduct Ribbon, and the Infantry Combat Badge. He also wore the Mediterranean Theatre Ribbon with three battle stars for campaigns of Rome to Arnos Upper Apennines, Pr. Valley. Prior to the war Louis worked for the Englert Ice Company. Returning from service, he was employed with Carl Chadek Trucking and John Stevens Trucking. Then he joined his brother in the Cox Brothers Plastering Company. In 1962, he went to work for the University of Iowa Hospitals as a plasterer. He worked here for over 25 years retiring in 1988. Louis was a lifetime member of Post #3949 of the VFW, having served as commander for 15 years, he also held other offices throughout the years. He also held offices in the District of the VFW. He belonged to Walter Johnson Post. #721 of the Coralville American Legion, a life member of the 91st. Division, and a lifetime member of the Cooties. Throughout the years, he has been a volunteer at the Iowa City Veterans Administration Hospital, and on Friday's you could always find Louis volunteering at the VFW. The outdoors was where Louis liked to spend his time, fishing, hunting and in his garden. His dogs were also something very special to him. However, most of all he loved being with his family, they truly were the apple of his eye. His family includes his wife, June; daughters, Linda J. Cox Perry and her husband, Ronald Perry and Patricia J. Cox Krukoski all of rural Iowa City; three grandchildren, Holly Renee Perry, Robert Allen Perry, and Daniel Louis Krukoski; brother, Harold A. Cox; of Iowa City; and two sisters, Lila Edmondson of Iowa City, and Shirley Yerington of Muscatine; and several nieces and nephews. Louis was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Louis A. Cox Jr., brothers, Clifford G. Cox, and Donald J. Cox, and two sisters, Leona R. Benson and Darlene E. Cox. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Louis’s family and his services.
