Obituary of Lois C. Hartshorn

Lois C. Hartshorn, age 82 formerly of Iowa City died Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Faith Care Center in Highland, IL. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 13, 2005, at the Congregational Chruch of Christ in Iowa City with the Reverend Bruce Fischer officiating. Burial will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her memory to Hospice of Southern Illinois, American Diabetes Association, Macular Degeneration Research/American Health Assistance Foundation or Faith Countryside Homes. Huffman was born November 22, 1922, on the family farm near Marysville, Ohio, the daughter of Russell C. and Gladys L. (Fenner) Huffman. She was raised in Marysville where she graduated from Marysville High School in 1940. During high school and following graduation, she worked as a secretary for the local county clerk. She married Richard T. Hartshorn on October 12, 1940 in Greenup, KY. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Marysville and Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Hartshorn entered the ministry in 1954 and their family moved to Yankton, SD where he attended Divinity College. Their family has lived in a number of communities where Reverend Hartshorn ministered, including Bryant, SD and Creighton, NE. At the age of 49, Lois graduated from nursing school while her family was living in Streator, IL. Their family moved to Palestine, Illinois in 1970 and she was a nurse in Robinson. She also worked in Urbana, IL while her husband served a congregation in Sidney, IL. The couple retired in 1986 and moved to Iowa City. Here she continued in nursing, working at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for several years. Reverend Hartshorn died in November 1999, and Lois moved to Highland, Illinois in 2003 to be near family. Lois enjoyed working in her garden, reading, being along side of her beloved husband in his ministry, and loving and caring for her family. Her family includes six children, Joyce Munson-Davis of Portland, OR, Richard Hartshorn and his wife, Gail of Wabasha, MN, Susan Warntjes and her husband, Wayne of Crandall, TX, Christy Libke of St. Louis, MO, Candace Ortiz and her husband, Lorenzo of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Miriam DeVries and her husband, Dean of Pocahontas, IL; sisters, Thelma Roberts of Columbus, OH, Mary Joan Shannon of Columbus, Oh, and Marjorie Finch of Marysville, OH; brother, Roy Huffman of Columbus; and more than 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Joan Montgomery, grandson, Calvin Ortiz; sisters, Emma Wilson and Ethel May Huffman; brothers, Russell and Charles Huffman.
