Obituary of Phyllis Goodnow

Phyllis J. Goodnow, age 81 of 825 N. Johnson Street, Iowa City died at her home, Tuesday, November 8, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 15, 2005, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at the Welsh Pioneer Cemetery near Sharon Center. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her memory. Phyllis June Hartenstine was born October 26, 1924 in Pottstown, PA, the daughter of Harry H. and Mary Nagel Hartenstine. She was a graduate of Pottstown High School. On February 24, 1946 she married Donald F. Goodnow in Pottstown. For a number of years the couple lived in Pottstown, where she was active in the Junior League. In 1960 they moved to Iowa City, where she has been a very active member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, where she also was employed as church secretary for many years, retiring in 1980. Phyllis was also active in Church Women United of Johnson County and its quilter’s group. She enjoyed crafts, gardening and spending time with her family. Her family includes three children, John Goodnow, Donna Goodnow, and Meg Dobbs all of Iowa City; grandchildren, Nicholas Lessing and his fiancée Megan Janssen, Sarah Gary and her husband Robert, Brian Dobbs, Libby Dobbs, and Rachel Hittner; great-grandchildren, Max and Ronan Gary; sisters, Linda Nichols and her husband Bernard, Faye Wade, brother Marvin Wade and his wife Rose, all of Pottstown, PA; sister-in-law, Margaret Roth of Washington; brother-in-law, Robert Goodnow and his wife Barbara, of Garner, NC; several nieces and nephews; and her many friends who were very important to her. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson Matthew Goodnow, and son-in-law Doug Dobbs. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Phyllis’ family and her services.
