Obituary of Harry Hillhouse

Harry “Jack” Hillhouse, age 83, of Iowa City died Tuesday February 28, 2006 at Windmill Manor following a lengthy illness. There will be private family graveside services held for Jack. Online condolences may be sent for Jack’s family through our website @ www.gayandciha.com. Jack was born January 6, 1923 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Edgar and Thelma (McVey) Hillhouse. He graduated from Ottumwa High School and went on to study violin at the Chicago Conservatory of Music. Jack was a concert violinist as a young man. He was 1st chair violin for the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra. Jack joined the US Army Air Corp during World War II, and worked on the Manhattan Project. While in the service he learned electronics and became electronic technician He married Ilene Daugherty in Lancaster, Missouri on January 4, 1947. Jack worked in California before coming to the department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Iowa in 1978, working in Van Allen Hall until retiring in 1985. Jack’s family includes his wife Ilene, his children Delana Sue and her husband, Joe Gracey of Hanford, California, Edgar “Ed” and his wife, Maureen of Simi Valley, California, Karen and her husband, Roger Dunn of Riverside and Douglas of El Segundo, California; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, two sisters, Helen Gates and Ida Mae Wagner, both of Sacramento, California and a brother, James and his wife, Jean of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota Jack was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter and grandson. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Jack’s Family and his services.
