Obituary of William E. Grell

William E. “Bill” Grell, age 71 of Iowa City, died Sunday, June 25, 2006, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made in Bill’s memory to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Online condolences may be sent for his family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Bill was born November 21, 1934, in Ft. Dodge, Iowa the son of Frank and Ruth (Balinsky) Grell. He attended school in Ft. Dodge. During the Korean Conflict Bill enlisted in the United States Army, where he served his country for over five years and a half years. Following service he returned to Iowa where he settled in the Iowa City area. His family includes his son, Danny Grell of Iowa City and his fiancé, Anita Abbott; daughter, Darcy Fry of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Mary-Jo Tomas of North Liberty, Jessica Hummer of North Liberty, and A.J. Flanegan of Iowa City. Other family members include four sisters, Beverly Cahill of Picacho, CA, Carol Hochstetler of Cedar Rapids, Judy Eli of Monravia, CA and Madge Salmi of Las Vegas, NV; four brothers, Richard Grell of Iowa City, Robert Grell of Phoenix, AZ, David Grell of Santee, CA and Douglas Grell of Cedar Rapids. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Mary-Jo Grell, two brothers, Frank Grell of Coralville, and Don Grell of Ft. Dodge.
