Obituary of George Franklyn Dunbar

George Franklyn Dunbar, Jr., of Iowa City died June 23, 2006 after a brief illness. A private family gathering was held at Gay and Ciha Funeral Home on Friday evening. George (“Frank”) was born in Jamestown, New York, on April 19, 1928, son of George F. and Christine B. Dunbar, and he grew up in Syracuse. He married Irene P. Nicholson on December 23, 1950, and was the proud father of three sons. Known for his quick wit and infectious smile, George worked in the automobile business in Upstate New York for over forty years and was active in Kiwannis and Rotary. He was an avid golfer and Syracuse University sports fan, and he enjoyed many years as a tenor in the church choir. On moving to Iowa City he became a regular member of the weekday morning pool group at the Senior Center and appreciated having children and grandchildren nearby. George is survived by his wife of 55 years, Irene, of Iowa City, sons Peter of Iowa City, Steve and his wife Sally Hartman of Iowa City and Christopher of Omaha, and grandchildren Elizabeth, Chris, and Nick. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ted. George’s courage brought his family and friends many years of laughter and love after a major stroke in 1997. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa City Senior Center and online condolences to www.gayandciha.com.
