Obituary of Maris E. Snider

Maris Evelyn Snider peacefully went to the light, Monday, January 5, 2015, to meet her Lord surrounded by caregivers, friends, and her son, Bob. Being the independent loving person she was, she directed her care as she transitioned from this life to the next in paradise. Funeral services will be held 3 pm Thursday, January 8, 2015, at Gay & Ciha Funeral Home with the Reverend Harold Schutte officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place at Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Memorial donations can be made in Maris's memory to Iowa City Hospice. Online condolences may be sent for Maris's family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Maris Evelyn (Nelson) Snider was born July 21, 1929, in Viborg, SD, the daughter of Everett W. and Lois M. (Peters) Nelson. Following graduation from high school she attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, and then attended and graduated from University of South Dakota with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1953. On February 21, 1954 she married Bill C.F. Snider in Wichita, KS. The couple moved to Iowa City in 1954, and Maris lived in their home on Melrose Court from 1962 -2007, when she moved to Bickford Cottage. She was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Iowa City having served as a deacon; member of Iowa City Committee on Community Needs, member/officer of Hawkeye Advocates for persons with disabilities, had received the Distinguished Service Award from the State of Iowa in 1984, and Governor's Volunteer Award in 1987. She also volunteered many hours at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Her family includes her son, Robert Snider, of North Liberty; sister, Elouise "Beezie" Mayer and her husband, Gaylord of Olathe, KS; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bill; and sister, Helen Collier.
