Obituary of Roma G. Stock Burr

Roma G. Stock Burr, age 93 formerly of rural Iowa City died Thursday, September 21, 2006, at the Hills Atrium Village. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 24, 2006, at the United Presbyterian Church in Lone Tree with the Reverends Jason Pittman and Terry Dees officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 3 to 6pm Saturday at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, and after 1pm Sunday at the church. There will be a memorial service conducted by the Eagles Auxiliary at 3pm Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made in Roma’s memory to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society. Roma Gertrude Boswell was born April 26, 1913 near Andover, Missouri the daughter of William Henry “Will” and Mary Suzie (Flanagan) Boswell. She married Albert Lee Stock on March 5, 1932. He died January 31, 1971. She married Lloyd F. Burr Sr. on December 15, 1975. He died on January 20, 1995. Roma was a homemaker all of her life, she also worked as a custom caterer. Her specialty was wedding cakes and wedding events. During this time she also worked in the housekeeping department at the University of Iowa for over seventeen years. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Lone Tree, as well as the City Farmerettes and the Fremont Homemakers. She had been awarded sixty year pin for her service with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles Lodge in Iowa City. During these years she held many of the local, and area offices; including serving as the State Mother in 1998. She has maintained her membership up to the time of her death. Her family includes one son and his wife, Dr. Marion Stock and Esther of Iowa City; daughter-in-law, Grace Stock of Clinton, IA step-son and his wife, Lloyd Burr Jr. and Maryanne of Lone Tree; step-daughter and her husband, Margaret Ann Smothers and Berle of Kansas City, MO; sister-in-laws, Lois Boswell of Lamoni, IA and Pauline Boswell of Gladstone, MO; 11 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 7 step-great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Some others who have been so much a part of Roma’s life includes Dorothy Ambrose of Coralville, and Charles and Fran McLean of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son, John A. Stock, daughters, Alice Mae Mitchell and Melba Jean Stock in infancy; 1 granddaughter, 2 sisters, and 6 brothers.
