Obituary of Maryann Newmire

Maryann Newmire, 78 of Washington, formerly of Iowa City died Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at her home following a brief illness. A gathering for family and friends to remember Maryann’s life will be held from 3 to 8pm Friday, January 19, 2007, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Following this time, cremation services will be provided with burial at a later date at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Maryann Griffith Newmire was born March 5, 1928, in Johnson County, Iowa the daughter of John E. and Ida (Graham) Griffith. She married Eugene A. Newmire on August 29, 1949, in Des Moines, Iowa. For a number of years she worked in food service for the Naval Pre-Flight Division held at the University of Iowa. She continued in food service at the University working in a number of different dormitories over the next twenty years. She and Eugene moved to Branson, Missouri in 1985, returning to Iowa to reside in Washington in 1999. She was active supporter of the Girls Scouts and she enjoyed her membership with Iowa City Family Camping Club. Her family includes her husband, Eugene, four sons, Eugene E. Newmire and his wife, Linda of Iowa City; Richard Newmire of Coralville, Charles Newmire of Iowa City, and Timothy Newmire of Washington; three grandsons, Jon, Daniel, and Chad. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Milton E. Griffith. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Mary Ann’s family and her services.
