Obituary of Richard Lawrence Lavine

Dick Lavine passed away peacefully on January 5, 2008 with his daughter, Linda, at his side. His spirit was welcomed to the other side with love and laughter by his deceased (in 1992) wife, Evie Lavine, and his son Lars Lavine, daughter Nancy Fogelberg and niece Lindi Fogelberg, all who passed on in 2005. His only surviving child, Linda, was blessed to be with him daily for the last nine months of his life. He had been living at Legacy Gardens in Iowa City, Iowa. His parents were L.A (Lanky) and Esther Lavine of St.Peter, MN. Dick and his beloved wife, Evie, cofounded Timbuktu Resort, Lake Vermilion, Cook, MN in 1952. The resort was their passion. Dick also taught industrial arts in the Aurora-Hoyt Lakes Public Schools. He retired from teaching and wintered in Mesa, AZ and later in Prescott, AZ. Dick showed all of us the way to live a positive, fulfilling life full of good humor, love, and joy. His creativity and artistry came through in all he did. Dick was a loving and cherished grandfather to Laura Rice (Eric Blanz), Craig Rice, Amy Stepec (Steve Stepec), Nels Fogelberg, Kate and Nora Lawrenson, as well as a very proud great grandfather to Jack Lavine Stepec. “Baby Jack” brought him much joy during his final 18 months of life. In addition to his daughter and grandchildren, Dick is also survived by his brother, Don Lavine, his sister, Carol Anderson, and by his son-in-laws - Steve Fogelberg of Cook, MN and Gary Lawrenson of Iowa City, his very special friend, Barbara Hochrein, of Prescott, AZ, nine nieces, and one nephew. A private family burial will be scheduled at a later date. Memorials in his name may be made to Amenity Hospice at 211 1st Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401 or to Alzheimers/dementia research at the Alzheimer’s Association of America 322 Eighth Ave. 7th Floor NY, NY 10001 Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web at www.gayandciha.com.
