Hung-shu Hu
1935 - 2015
Condolences
To Judy and family,
We are sorry for the passing of our dear friend, Professor Hung-Shu Hu. We had a memorable time in college days and unforgettable ROTC experiences in the post-graduate military service in Taiwan when we were in the same training unit. We were so fortunate to have shared the cruise experiences with you and Hung-Shu in December 2013 and October 2014. Please accept our condolences and take care.

The professor once tried to explain the meanings of some Chinese characters to me. In his attempt he made the meaning of each character sound more like a poem than a definition.
Dear Judy, Ching chu, Ching an, and Ching yuan,
Dear Judy and family, You have lost a GREAT Husband and Father and I have lost a GREAT Friend. I am very saddened and extend to you all my most sincere sympathy and loving friendship. Wes.
I am saddened with Mr. Hu's passing. He was my MFA advisor & I learned so much. He was inspirational & raised my art to another level with his critiques. Hung-Shu was also a kind & generous man. Please accept my condolences.
Dear Judy and Family,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy on your loss. My heart is with you at this sad time.
It has been many years, but both my husband and I were students of Professor Hu in the early 70's. He was such a kind and compassionate person. A GREAT teacher. Some of my best memories of being a student were a result of being in his studio.
I was fortunate to have worked in the Levitt Center where I enjoyed his work every day. He will be missed.
My thoughts are with you and your family. Fondly, Helen
I was lucky to be one of Mr. Hu's first students at UNI and later as a student at University of Iowa...Mr. Hu gave me his parents address in Taiwan when he found out I was headed overseas with the Marines...said to look them up if I ever got there...I did,,,,Spent the day with his Mother and Father and sister...had dinner...and probably one of the best experiences I ever had ..his sister acted as translator...I remember she spoke English with a British accent. Mr Hu was a great artist, a great professor, and a great inspiration to any student lucky enough to be enrolled in one of his classes...He will be missed..Jim Fisher..
Professor Hu leaves such a beautiful legacy in Iowa City with his remarkable and brilliant artwork but even more so with his beautiful family. Our hearts is with you.

I gasped when I first walked into a gallery full of Professor Hu's paintings three years ago. I had never seen anything like it, so powerful and unique. Prof. Hu created a visual language that will have a lasting impact in this world. I will always remember the twinkle in his eye, his smile, his kindness and his encouragement. He had accomplished so much in his life. I once asked him, "Did you feel any pressure from all the work you did?" He said, "No, I am happy everyday!" Prof. Hu, I am so happy and honored to have known you.
Although we only met few times during the past. But vividly remembered our first meet was under the heavy Summer thunderstorm on Lake Michigan in Chicago on July 4 1998. We shared great time with you and your lovely wife at the Cheesecake Factory while you ate a giant hamburger.
It is very sad that we won't have another chance to enjoy the ice cream together! We both love the sweet, Ha-ha.
In Seattle, We had heavy rain on the day you left us. I believe the rain-drops are the tears from people who missed you.
My deepest condolences to the family of Professor Hu. What a remarkable life he had!
I met Hu at our place of business shortly after he moved to Iowa City. We had a valuable business relationship and friendship. He was a most interesting person to visit with. I speak for all of our employees in saying he was truly a class person.
My condolences go out to his wife, Judy and all the children and family members.
Iowa City and The University of Iowa is a better place thanks to his time and talents here. He will be missed but his fine works live on.

My sincere sympathies and best wishes to the family of Dr. Hu Hung-shu. I know that the loss of such a valuable person and family member is painful. I add my sympathies to all the beautiful condolences that have been expressed already.
17 years ago I became your student, and I've hardly used an eraser since. It's incredible how sometimes the simplest things can change a person's outlook.
- Always your student.
Ching-chu, what a wonderful write-up about your father. He obviously left a big footprint here in Iowa. I'm sorry for you & your family's loss... You must feel so proud of his accomplishments and works!! Your kids too will see their grandfather's hand in his art pieces. Nice. God Bless You All.

Mr. Hu has great staying power.
He is larger than physical life,
and will live on in so many ways
some that we can imagine, others that we have yet to know.
I am honored to have known Professor Hu and touched by the lasting impact he has made in the world through his art, his teaching, and his relationships.
Prof. Hu encouraged me to pursue my masters in art at Iowa. I was a teaching assistant for him from 1987-89. I am grateful for his guidance. He will always hold a special place in my heart! He will be missed.
