Obituary of Myrtle M. Rauer-Buck
Myrtle M. Rauer Buck, 93 of 1 Oaknoll Court, Iowa City died Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 13, 2009 at Oaknoll Retirement Residence. She will be buried at Memory Gardens Cemetery next to her husband, Luther E. Rauer. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in her memory to the Oaknoll Foundation. Online condolences may be sent for her family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Myrtle was born September 12, 1915, the youngest of nine children of Elvis & Fannie Martin of rural Winigan, Missouri. Myrtle loved the many horses on her farm and was an accomplished rider in her youth. She married Luther E. Rauer in 1935 and then completed her education degree at Northeast Missouri Teachers College (presently Truman University) in Kirksville, Missouri. Myrtle was a dedicated classroom teacher. She taught in one-room Missouri schoolhouses for eight years before moving to Grand Mound, Iowa where she taught in the Grand Mound High School for Superintendent Luther E. Rauer. After 1948 Myrtle stayed home to raise their children. Myrtle & Luther moved their three sons to Iowa City in 1957. Myrtle resumed teaching in 1960 and taught sixth grade for six years at Henry Sabin Elementary and for sixteen years at Herbert Hoover Elementary. Iowa City is filled with Myrtle's sixth graders. Luther had died in 1971 and after her 1982 retirement from teaching Myrtle married Earl G. Buck of West Liberty in 1982. Earl died in 1998. Myrtle has three sons, John & Andrea Rauer of Iowa City; James Rauer of Colorado Springs; and Martin & Cindy Rauer of Colorado Springs. She has four grandchildren, Leif & Nadine Rauer of Charlotte, North Carolina, Jessica & Wayne Prejeant of Colorado Springs, Joel Rauer of Colorado Springs, and Dr. Amy Rauer of Auburn, Alabama. She has four great-grandchildren: America Copeland of Colorado Springs, Dalton and Cassidy Prejeant of Colorado Springs, and Will Rauer of Charlotte, NC.
