Howard W. DeWild
1941 - 2015
Condolences
Howard brought a lot of inspiration with his teaching career. My sympathy goes out to the family. I was a student of Howard's at Allison-Bristow.
I have so many memories growing up around and having Mr. DeWild as my teacher. I loved working in the concession stand with Mr. DeWild, it was a highly entertaining experience. As our driver's ed instructor, I am quite sure he didn't get paid nearly enough to teach us all to drive. His laugh and his love of family will not be forgotten. Linda, Louis, Juliana and Malina, I am so sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in the many moments you shared together. God Bless.
My sincere sympathies to the family of Mr. DeWild. He was a great teacher...Government, Psychology and Driver's Ed. Absolutely helped us mature into adults, and think for ourselves, with a dose of humor. They certainly broke the mould when they made him. God Bless you now and always.
Mr DeWild was one of my favorite teachers in high school and I have many fond memories of drivers ed, psychology and government. My condolences to his family. He will truly be missed. I wish my kids could have been lucky enough to have had him As a teacher.
I am truly saddened to hear of Howard's passing. He was respected by all his peers in the crop insurance business and I will always be grateful for his professionalism and outstanding work ethic for FMH. Rest in peace my friend.
May God's grace and peace keep you protected during this difficult time. Hold tightly to one another and know that your loss is heaven's gain.
My deepest sympathies to the family. May the love of Christ surround you during your difficult time. I could share countless memories about Mr. DeWild but the one I share to my family and friends happened several years after graduating from A-B. I caught Mr. DeWild outside at his home one day and we began talking about our week. I told him about mine and then he shared how he had been on the road that week (maybe Chicago) and came across a stranded woman who needed a ride. Long story short, he spent several hours helping the woman out with her predicament and at the end of the day, the lady looked at him, almost in tears and disbelief, and asked him why he spent so much time and effort helping her. Mr. DeWild looked at her and said, "I'm a Christian and that's what God commands me to do." That was one of the greatest "sermons"/acts of witnessing I've ever heard and I'll keep telling that story but more importantly, trying to live that story until Christ reunites us again. Rest in Peace Mr. DeWild. You were truly a good and faithful servant.
My deepest sympathies to the DeWild family. One of my favorites teachers. A passionate teacher who truly loved teaching and cared for all his students. Taught me how to drive, navigating the one way streets in Waterloo. A love of bookkeeping - my chosen career path, and so much more. Youth group Leader - bowling, roller skating, pizza parties, good times.
So sorry to hear of Howards passing. Every memory we have of him
brings a smile to our face. He didn't just teach us what was in a book.
He taught from his heart and those kind of lessons you never forget.
Extra credit: if you capitalized God, if you listed God first in your quiz when naming the reasons explorers came to America - God, Gold & Glory - and if you ever found that his Bible wasn't in the proper position on his desk which was always supposed to be at the top of the stack. Small things that we all carried into our lives. My mom still talks about the time when my brother was struggling with World History and other subjects. You were the only teacher to call her and let her know how much he had improved and was doing better. Thank you, Mr. DeWild, for believing in so many students, for your sharp wit and your high expectations for our grades and our lives. Blessings to your family and the legacy you leave behind.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mr. DeWild. Howard was a wonderful person and great teacher. Sorry to hear of your loss.
Our thoughs and condolences to you, Linda and family. I have worked with "The Howster" for 20+ years with never a boring moment. Always sharp with his wit and too many inside jokes to print here. I'll certainly miss the harasssing phone calls and emails we sent back and forth.
My condolences to the DeWild family. Mr. Dewild touched so many lives and made this world a better place. He will be missed but never forgotten.
My thoughts and prayers to out to your family. Mr. DeWild was a respected and beloved teacher at Allison. His sense of humor made a sometimes boring subject fun! Rest in Peace, and God Bless.
My favorite teacher! The lords Grace be with all of you.
My prayers are with the family. Howard's class was always a highlight of the day. I loved the way he taught and the discussions we had in his class.
Linda, Lewis & Rebecca, Juliana & Mike, Melina & Jeremy & all the grandchildren our hearts ache for each of you, but we rejoice in knowing that we will see him again in the Lords house. Thoughts and prayers are with each of you during this difficult time. We will see you on Wed.
Our sympathies to the family. Many fond memories from the Allison days.
Dear Linda, Louis, Julianna and Malina, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones. Howard will be deeply missed by all who knew him. I will always remember that Howard was the poor fellow selected by Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Co. to put up with some woman who didn't know any better than to be the one (and only) woman to apply for claims adjuster working in all men crews. The grace with which Howard and Linda accepted that challenge was a true blessing. Always the teacher and psychologist, Howard trained me well in the finer points of teaching the crop owners to accept fair assessments of their crop losses. He was so very alive, humorous and a joy to be around. May Howard rest in Peace.
Dear Linda, Louis, Julianna, and Malina, I am devastated! I am so sad!! I feel so horrible for your loss! I had no idea Mr. DeWild had been ill.A couple of my favorite memories I will never forget are, of course, my senior year classes with Mr. DeWild! He not only taught me government and psychology, but built my self-esteem and believed in me and my abilities!! He also supported my already- established political persuasion! My entire family loved him. After HS and college, and moving back to Allison his family became fast friends! Linda, I treasure our time together as well. Our children played together. Mr. DeWild visited me after my stroke, I was thrilled that he came. I will pray for your comfort, strength in your faith, and love of many friends and family! God bless you ALL, Sally
So sorry to hear of your loss. Howard taught me in high school at A-B High (class of 1972). Wish I had known they were here in Coralville. May the Peace of the Lord be with you all.
Great picture of Howard! I don't know how many times Howard and I would talk about politics. He would always says to me, "Chris, I am a conservative Democrat". I would look at him confused. Whatever he was, I think he and I were on the same page. Great man! I know he is enjoying heaven, and we will see him there!
My deepest condolences to Mrs. DeWild and to the rest of the family. I am so sorry to hear of Mr. DeWild's passing. I enjoyed all of my classes with Mr. DeWild. He was a memorable teacher and presence in the classroom.
Without Mr. DeWild, I would have never thought to see myself better than a C/D student. He took my C's when I first started Allison-Bristow my senior year, & said, "See this? You are better than that. I expect to see A's from here on." From then on, that's all I got were A's & he high-fived me every time as if it were my first A. I made the honor roll & it felt great. I imagined his high fives all through college! Sometimes in life it just takes one teacher to encourage a child and for me, he was that one teacher.
Our condolences to your family. Howard was very well liked and very well respected by all. While we lost touch over the years I enjoyed the card games and his occasional political jabs when we lived only two blocks apart.
I'm so sorry to hear about Mr. DeWild! I was lucky enough to have him his last years of teaching and have so many memories about his classroom! I remember always waiting for the joke...you always knew it was coming! My favorite memory of him was one that showed that he valued the TRUE lessons in life...not just the grade....So hopefully A-B won't revoke my diploma but I'll share the story... I cheated on my world history exam...big time...I would have flunked it. I found out about the test only hours before and panicked. Instead of picking the mediocre student which would be closer to my skill level to cheat off of, I picked the smartest kid...lo and behold I got an A on the test. I couldn't live with the guilt of cheating so I put my tail between my legs and went into his room and told him I cheated...it was the hardest thing I'd ever had to do (as a 15 year old that didn't say much)...but I knew I had to do it. He asked me what grade I would have got if I didn't cheat and I told him without a doubt an F. He was very quiet and just told me to go to my next class. The next day he called me into his room and told me he had my updated grade...he gave me an A !?!!! He said the lesson I had learned about the importance of taking responsibility for your actions was much more important than learning about dead presidents. That character is more important than knowledge. How true! As I am now a parent and teaching my kids about values, I often think of that story and try to remember to emphasize the things in life that are truly important. He will be remembered so fondly by so many and he will forever be in the passenger seat of so many with the "Mr. DeWild brake!!" Thoughts and prayers to you and your family!
We remember all the fun, yet at times, difficult times spent with "Mr. DeWild" in class. He sure knew how to teach you - weather it meant being extra kind and easy or short and hard - he just knew what you needed at that particular time! Always told us Bristow kids we were the best drivers because we started at such a young age, what crazy drivers women were that wore curlers in their hair. (He knew my mom was a beautician) He always had that smile on his face along with some kind of remark. Kept us smiling right along with him! He will forever be remembered! Our deepest condolences are with you Linda and family. May God keep you and bless you all today and always. Keeping you in our prayers!

Howard's psych, government and driver ed classes were always something to be remembered. Your family has our sympathy.
Always enjoyed your classes. Linda and family may the Lord comfort and bless you in the days to come.
Mr. De Wild always was open to spirited debate in class ,and in a benign manner communicated at least to me, the necessity of thinking for yourself. The educational system needs more Howard DeWild . May the God who created Howard give your entire family comfort in the days ahead.
Sincerely
Steve L. Olson

My sympathy goes out to Linda and family. When I moved to Bristow half way through my sophomore year in High School he was the one that gave me the absolute best memories.I took every class that I could that he taught (even drivers ed).He made me feel welcome and I learned so much from him and had fun in the process. I am feeling quite emotional as I write this.We need more educators that cared as much as he did.
Sorry for the loss of a great man. He had great stories and a great laugh to go along with them. Thoughts and prayers for the Dewild family.
I'm so sorry for your loss, he was a great influence in my life,I often go back to his stories he told in class and that always had an underlying message that if you truly listened you would be a better person and citizen, I am truly a better person for knowing him.
Our sympathy to the entire family at this time. We will miss him so much. It was always fun to go in the backyard and talk to Howard and Linda and enjoy a cold lemonade in the summer evenings. Howard is in heaven now with Jesus.
Thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends. He was an amazing man. One of my all time favorite teachers even though I hated history. Eric and I often share stories about his classes with our boys. He later became our neighbor and he would always swing in to shoot hoops and visit with Austin while out on his daily walk. He will forever live on in our memories and truly be missed.
Our sympathy to the DeWild family. Howard was a favorite teacher of all three of our children. I think they all still can recite the names of all the Presidents thanks to Howard. I know he enjoyed being by family, he told me so on one of his return trips to Allison. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.
We're so sorry for your loss. You're in our thoughts and prayers.
