Henry William "Hank" Louis
1931 - 2011
Condolences
Hank you are a very influential father figure and friend. You spurred my interest in aviation, resulting in a career as an USAF officer and afterwards as a commercial airline pilot.
You and Sherry were overwhelmingly generous. You enabled me to attend and graduate from the University of Iowa. I never would have attained my undergraduate degree without your help and am forever grateful and indebted.
We settled in Iowa City after my military service to allow my children to experience the beauty and wholesome lifestyle of Iowa City. I give you the credit for a very smart decision to do so.
Not many things seem to really matter in this fast-paced electronic immediate gratification life we lead today. You are forever etched in my heart and mind as one of the people that matter and always will. I think about you frequently and will until the day I die.
You and I will drink frozen shots of vodka from little pewter shot cups in eternity...I know so
How's the view Hank? I love you and always will! And make sure you keep a bottle of Stoli in the freezer so it's ready when I join you, because you know I will end up where you are and we have lots more to talk about face to face forever
I believe that nothing happens by chance. That is why I found the website about Hanks passing. My heart goes out to all of your family. He was and is a very special person. Even though I have not see you for many years you have always been in my heart and memories. One memory that came back to me was Hank sittting in a chair by the kitchen window reading jokes out of his magazine. Don't exactly know why that thought. Maybe because he ws enjoying himself and others. My love to you.
Dear Sherry and "kids", I'm so sorry to hear about Hank's death. I worked for Henry Louis sometime around 1967 and always admired him for his kindness and integrity. I'm currently in Miami with my brother who's in critical condition so I wasn't able to make it to the funeral, but I want to send you all my best wishes and tell you how much I will miss him.
To Sherry and all of the Children,
Hi Sherry and all the Louis girls,
My sympathies to the Family.
My husband, Stan Haring, photographer & artist, was a client of Hank's from late 60s until his death in 1990. Often I was the "runner" and we both were impressed by the friendliness of the staff and professionalism of their business.
One time I mentioned to Hank that the store had a comforting aroma about it, with all the scopes, photographic equipment and film around. He laughed and said his clothes often carried home the same aroma.

Hank gave me my first job. I started part time after school and worked full time the summer of 1966 at the store when it was at 126 E. College. He had such a dry sense of humor and could say so much with very few words. I will always appreciate his wit and intelligence. I loved working in the rich environment full of fine photographic and scientific equipment. As a 16 year old, I learned so much just studying catalogs and sales materials.
Never forget the great family times with Hank in the BVI, at the beaches in NC, and at our home here in Cary - one Thanksgiving night stands out in particular. Thanks! :-)
Thoughts and prayers are with your family. One of my fondest memories was when I got to play in your backyard as a child. In turn, my children always ask to cross the street when visiting Papa Les and Brandma Bonnie to see Sasha.
As his CPA, I was privileged to work with Hank for over 35 years. For many years, Hank carried on the Henry Louis family business, succeeding his grandfather and father, and their collective endeavors deserve mention in any history of Iowa City. Probably nothing speaks better for Hank than the long employment of two of his employees, Rita Lekin and Edna Schindhelm. He always had a place for them in the business. Hank was a businessman, and a gentleman, and I shall miss him.
I hope your memories of Hank are a comfort to you during this difficult time. Hank and Sherry were wonderful neighbors and I'll never forget their kindness and generosity.
Louis Family - Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this difficult time. Hank will be truly missed! Take Care!
My Sympathies to Sherry and the Louis family.
Great photo on this page. It reminds me of an air trip to Wisconsin back in 1958 or '59 when I was in grad school. Hank and I had similar interests in photography and electronics, so there was a period during high school when we spent some time together. Also, our families had been acquainted for many years. After I developed some medical problems a few years ago, Hank called me regularly. I was able to partially reciprocate when he got sick. He will be,missed by me and many others.
My thoughts go to a time when your father would bring "the girls" to my home to look at puppies. No one could drive and had to wait for a ride. With help from sisters, Heidi got to pick the new family member. Cito was very lucky and much loved by the Louis family. It was a happy time.
God Bless!
Carol
Hank was my very good friend. A bond developed as we shared many hours of flying Army generals around the country during our time as Army Aviators. Hank was also a wise mentor to me, always sharing so insight or wisdom he had gained during his very colorfull life. Hank was always willing to give a helping hand if needed and offered his sage advise whether you wanted it or not. I served with Hank in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1982 until his retirement from the Army. He and I lived the furtherest from our duty station in Des Moines, but we were the two aviators who volunteered to fly nearly every fixed wing mission. Hank was a very proficient aviator always knowing the right words to say to the generals that we often flew around. Hank had a way with words, always making you feel that you were in good hands. When the Army brass came up with some dumb things, as they some times do, Hank's favorite saying was "SUMS-A-GUNS ARE OUT TO GET US!"
My dad was a pharmacist at Lewis's Rexal Drug Store in the 30's. I was the same age as young Hank and we played together often when growing up. My dad and Hanks mom were cousins. I especially remember Hanks fascination with trains and once we climbed aboard a stream engine sidetracked in the rail yard near his house on So. Linn St and thought we were really something else. My sincere condolences on hisj passing. John
To all who loved Hank as our family has, we wish to share these thoughts. Thank you for being a very dear friend for over 30 years. You and Sherry were the best next door neighbors that anyone could ever hope for. Thank you for such wonderful memories of shared gourmet meals and laughter at your kitchen counter and Hank's signature Manhattans with the extra cherry. Thank you for your generosity of love for our children as they grew up. Hank, your unique sense of humor and "Hankism" expressions live on in our daily conversations. You are missed, but not forgotten.
Sincere condolences to Henry's family.
We had many good memories, especially the helicopter flights.
