Condolences
Bruce will be greatly missed by his family, many friends and co-workers. He always had a big smile and was eager to help anyone out. Our thoughts are with you Michelle, Bruce and Clayton at this time.
Michelle and Davis family,
I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Bruce's passing. He was such a wonderful person and had a tremendous spirit. He had overcome so many obstacles in the past months. It was a pleasure to work with him and get to know him at St. Luke's. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Sincerely,
Sara Albert
Sending my thoughts and prayers to Calvin Davis and family. I'm truly sorry for your loss. He's in good hands with the man upstairs. Know that we are here for you if you need anything. Brenda Manson (Jason Manson's mom)....
Bruce Davis was a great man! The Lord needs him more than we do and our loss is heaven's gain. May Michelle, Calvin, and Bruce know that the Wooldrik family loved Bruce Davis and will miss him greatly. We have so many fond memories of him.
Calvin and Bruce, please know that we will always be there for you.
Dave and Peg Wooldrik
Bruce, I was blessed to work with you at Chezik Bell Honda for Five great years ! Even after that you always greeted me with that awesome smile while getting my car in for any service!
I will miss you dearly and it was a pleasure to know you!!!!!!!!!
My thoughts and prayers are with you Calvin and Bruce. I will never forget Big Bruce's smile, it lit up every ballpark we played in. He was such a great individual and coach. There was no greater motivation to get a hit than when Big Bruce was coaching on 3rd base, I knew he would waive around, and I would be safe at home. Today the Lord has waived Big Bruce home. My thoughts and prayers are with you both.
Dear Davis family -
Bruce and Calvin- our sympathy goes out to you for the loss of your dad. Your dad was a great guy and brings back many happy memories through the years. He was so very proud of both of you. Randy & Julie Willman
I sincerely regret hearing of the death of Bruce, and Marian and I grieve the loss along with the family. We pray that you find relief through prayer. I remember Bruce when he came as a first year student to the University of Iowa and I have been fairly close with him until now. Bruce will be long remembered as a gentle, kind person who deeply cared about others. May God rest his soul.
Michelle: I just heard of this today (28th) and would like to extend my condolensces to you and your family. May your memories of Bruce carry you through, until you see him again!
Love, Linda
We send our deepest sympathy. We will never forget the great meals Bruce grilled for the Slugger baseball team and parents at several CABA World Series the team participated in. Our thoughts are with you.
Bruce was an outstanding freind and teammate. He always extendend his hand in freindship and welcomed me when I first arrived in Iowa City as a brother in his extended family. He'll forever be "Sweet Bruce" to me and his humor, smile, and lust for living will live in my memories of him. Although words seem inappropriate; please accept my sincere condolences.
Thinking of the Davis boys and wishing them peace and strength in this difficult time. Bruce will be so terribly missed by all whom he touched. Heaven has gained one of the most gentle souls I have known.
I was sadden to hear of the passing of such a big , vibrant man. It is with great respect that I extend my condolences to his wife, sons and the rest of his family and friends. I had the honor of playing right next to this man and he was a great player and a fierce competitor. He led by example and was the anchor of the offensive line. From the comments from his friends and family I can tell that he lived his life after the game in the same way. Strong, massive friendships were the hallmark of his personal and business life. He will truely be missed.
Bruce was, without a doubt, the best neighbor Brian and I will ever have. We lived next door to him in North Liberty. He was simply the kindest, most fun, hilarious, and good hearted man. He loved his sons immensely and never ceased bragging about them to us! From Bruce Jr. and his music to Calvin and his sports, he was the proudest father. We spent quite a few nights at Bob's Place and plenty of nights out on our patios, just chillin'. Bruce's heart was simply HUGE. Our deepest sympathy for his loss, and to his lovely wife and his boys, know that his love will carry you through till the end of your days. He was simply magic. After the birth of our son, several years after we had moved away (he was always keeping up with us!), he left a message for our newborn, encouraging him to play for the Chicago Bears (my husband is a die hard Bronco fan). He was simply the best. We were so lucky to have known him and shared our lives with him. Love ya, buddy.
Bruce sold me a Honda Accord 13 years ago and I was impressed with his manner and his thoughtfulness even after the sale. He was a true gentleman. I smile to think of him accompanying me to the gas station to fill up the car for me after the sale. He was such a big guy, he could not have been comfortable in my little car! My deepest sympathy to you.

Our thoughts are with all of you, especially Bruce and Calvin - We will always treasure the wonderful memories of the Iowa City Bulls and the great times we spent with Bruce - the road trips, the parking lot barbeques with the famous Bruce Davis shrimp sauce, playing golf, the scavenger car hunt and many weekends of baseball. God bless you all. The Grady's
This truly saddens me. I remember Bruce's kindness all through highschool. Even though I haven't seen him in many years, I still remember that he was a good guy and loved by everyone.
My deepest sympathy to you Michelle. What a huge loss .We were all shocked and sadden on the St. Luke's Rehab unit. to hear of Bruce's passing. He was are star player! The big man with the soft voice, with his fighting spirit. We all cared for him deeply and loved cheering him on every step he fought back from his stroke. He was a fighter! Such a big personality. We miss him!!! Michelle your love and devotion was evident everyday. What a wonderful wife you were to Bruce. My heart goes out to you and your family. Come see us when the time is right . We want to hug you.. Respectfully, Mary Knee O.T.
Dear Michelle,
I wish there were words to make you feel better but we both know there's no such thing. I'm so sickened and saddened for you, Michelle. As I read through all of the other messages that others left, it's quite evident that your husband was one in a million with a heart that was larger than life. I knew Bruce through Chezik but he also worked with my parents at Hawkeye Foods for years. You will get through this, even though the thought right now seems impossible. You need to lean on your friends and family around you and allow them to help you. You are in my heart, Michelle. Please reach out to me and I'll be there for you.
What A Calm And Gentle Spirit I Have When I Think Of Bruce Clayton Davis, My Brother-In-Law
And His Love For The Lord,
His Family
Extended Family
And His Dear Friends.
Calvin, I'm so sorry for your loss. As I read your dad's obituary, it was clear to me why you were always so friendly and compassionate to all. You definitely will carry on his spirit. My prayers are going out to you and your family.
Sorry to hear of your loss.
Very Sincerely,
David UnderwoodB5yYd
Lonnie and I met Bruce when he worked at Chezik-Sayers (and then Chezik-Bell) Honda. He was a friendly man and always had a smile on his face. He always remembered our names, our kids, work, etc. He made sure he greeted us every time we were in the dealership. He arranged for Calvin to give our son and some of his friends a tour of the U of I Football locker rooms, practice field, etc - which the boys loved! Once we met Bruce, we always made sure that we bought our cars from him. Over the years, we ended up buying at least 5 Hondas from him. After the dealership changed hands, and Bruce went to the Ford dealership, we didn't get to see him anymore. We were surprised to find out about his stroke and death. We miss going in the dealership and seeing him there. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bruce's family and friends.
Our thoughts and prayer are with Bruce and the family. .
I remember countless evenings hearing Val and Bruce talking on the phone and cracking each other up about the days work or sports! My children adopted Bruce and Michelle as Uncle Bruce and Aunt Michelle and they never thought twice about it! Birthdays, football, basketball and baseball games won't be the same. But the words of encouragement will stay with us always!
If something was wrong at home Bruce would always know what to say and how to say it to get things moving smooth again.
Our family is going to miss Uncle Bruce and his counseling sessions but I think he passed that great nack onto his Love, Michelle!
Our hearts are heavy , our eyes filled with tears, but we know Bruce is ok!
My wife and I ate many meals with you at St. Lukes, yet at different tables. Your soft voice, but huge heart and love of life showed strong. Your family was a big support to you each day and they knew that was so important in your recovery. My wife has suffered a stroke recently and we overlapped in therapy at St. Lukes for a few weeks. We were in room 618, right next to you. I cried when I read Bruce had passed away the day after we left 6 west. My thoughts and prayers are with your family, may God bless you.
Fannie, my very good friend, I am truly sorry and in shock over the message you left me saying that Bruce had died, I'm still trying to process this. I will see you at the funeral home, please take care of yourself during this most difficult time, I know it may not seem like it now but things will get better. Please don't hesitate to come and talk to me or call me, no matter what time it is! To the rest of Bruce's family, may you all cherish the memories you had with him, I know that he was indeed as great a person as everyone has said. God bless, Doreen
After reading all the condolences and memories shared, I am disappointed that I never met Bruce. I'm sure my life would have been enriched by knowing him. My heart goes out to Michelle and all his family and friends. God bless all of you. You will be in my heart on Monday.
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Bruce. He was gentle but tough as nails as he worked on his recent recovery from a stroke. It was a gift to know such a focused, kind man.
Rest in Peace Bruce Davis. My heart and prayers goes out to the Davis family. Big Bruce's smile would light up any room he walked into and his presence was the light of that room. You were, and always will be a GREAT HAWKEYE!
Bruce had infinite patience, always uplifting words of wisdom, a forever smile that touched your heart whenever you were around him. God blessed us to have had Bruce in our lives.
I was honored to meet Bruce on a single occasion but, in that one meeting it was easy to see the class and character he possessed. I have known Michelle since she was a little girl and her family since 1972. All are people of class and character. Once a tremendous loss however we all are better people for meeting and knowing Bruce Davis. May God bless the Davis and Messer families during these difficult times. Gary and Beth Hixson
Barb & I are sorry for your loss. I worked with Bruce at Hawkeye for several years. He always had a smile and encouraging word. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Bruce was a great person from the first time i met him. I bought two cars from Bruce and i'm saddened & shocked by his passing away. I would stop by every now and then to talk to him and he always had time no matter how busy he was. Bruce was kind & eager to help i will miss you my friend. My prayers go out to your family you were a great person & a great salesman. May God comfort your family in this difficult time knowing that we will see you again.
I bought two cars from Bruce. He was a really nice, friendly guy. I actually have fond memories dealing with Bruce and you don't hear that too often with car salesman! (Just kidding!) My thought and prayers are with his family. God bless you all and may he rest in peace.
dear michelle,
I was so sad to open my paper and see Bruce's name and picture and know that you'd lost your beautiful man. I recall times you've supported and encouraged me with your positive, no-nonsense view of thingsI hope you're calling on those qualities now to keep yourself strong. I'm thinking of you
del
Michelle, I felt sucker-punched when I saw Bruce in the paper yesterday. I am devastated for you and the whole family. Please take strength from all of the people who loved Bruce and please, please take care of yourself.
Bob, Terese, RJ and Jenni would like to express our deepest sympathy on the loss of Bruce. Our family have many great memories of the Rebel baskeball years and considered everyone family. We appreciated all , the support and friendship we received from Bruce. He was one of the nicest guys around and always had a smile on his face. He loved his family! We were glad to have known him! Sincerely, The Lisenbee family
To the family of Bruce Davis, my prayers and thoughts are with you all at this time. I had the pleasure of meeting Bruce in June 2004 when I purchased my Honda Accord from him which I still have. Bruce was a kind and generous man who cared deeply about people. I will never ever forget the excellent heartfelt service I received from him. He drove my car to me and my wife personally from Iowa City to our home in Marion and took the time to further explain the car to my wife Coleen in detail. As a friend he will be greatly missed, but memories of him will live with me a lifetime.
Extending my deepest condolences to Bruce's family. I met him 1993 when I bought a Honda through him and liked him for his friendly and gentle manner. I could tell he was very sincere. I enjoyed a casual relationship with him when I saw him occasionally over the years at the dealership. He was certainly a very nice man and I am so sorry for your loss. Moe Wadle
Michelle and family,
Our sincere condolences. We are so fortunate to have been in Bruce's company, but for too short a time! Bruce was THE human face for the many jobs and businesses to which he lent his time and energy. So when we think of Chezik-Sayers/Bell Honda or helping you, Michelle, get to the wedding chapel before he does, Bruce's face, smile and passion are what we remember. God bless you.
I met Bruce in 1999 when I got my first new car, it was a 1999 honda civic. He was awesome, then I got a number of cars from him and I had two kids and he was really nice to them. He was a good sales man and a friend.
Our prayers are with you. We brought our Honda from Bruce a few years back and he was a joy to work with. We all loved Bruce, but God loved him best.
To all who loved Bruce,
Our hearts are heavy thinking about our loss. Bruce was a vibrant man with so much to give. We have all learned of love, life and the gift of family through him. His laughter and smile will forever be in our hearts and minds. Bruce was a great friend, through the years working at Hawkeye together, the boys growing up and the many memories after. Our memories of him will be many. May you find peace in what he has taught us. Our thoughts are with you through this difficult time.
Mark, Dana, Josh, Maddie and Mayson Vernon
Michelle, Bruce, and Calvin,
Your family is in our prayers. Bruce's good nature and gentle spirit will stay with our family, always. With Love, Rod, Allison, Naomi, and the boys
We enjoyed being around bruce very much,He brought much joy to a job,I worked with him at Hawkeye, for many years, and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Dearest Michelle and Family,
Brent and I want to extend our most sincere condolences and our hearts ache for you knowing the devastation you are feeling in the loss of Bruce. We can honestly say he was one of the most caring, giving and selfless people anyone could ever meet. He was always concerned how others were doing and made sure they came first. I'll never forget after we bought our van he came to our house to help me with questions about it. He knew I had three small children and insisted he come to the house because that would be easier for me. That's just the person he was, always genuine.
Michelle, I have known you for nearly 13 years. I wish I could give you the biggest hug in the world right now. Bruce was the luckiest man in the world to have had you in his life and together you made a beautiful couple. I hope you will take comfort in knowing how much your friends and family love you. Bruce will never be forgotten and his memory will live on forever. Our prayers are with you.
Sincerely,
Kimberly and Brenton Harris
Michelle, Bruce and Calvin...our hearts go out to you. Bruce was a wonderful man and he will be missed by all. We hope the special memories you have created, provide comfort in this time of great sadness. Our thoughts are with you...Doreen, Dan, Damon and Maya.
We wish to pass our deepest condolences to the Davis family. Bruce was a great neighbor. We just moved to the neighborhood last spring and one of our first days out Bruce drove by in his Caddy, rolled his window down and said to my husband Josh "Welcome to the neighborhood Dog!" It was really great! Recently when we were car shopping Bruce made a point of saying hello to me at the dealership and letting me know if I needed anything to let him know. He will be greatly missed.
Michele,
I met Bruce along with many of the other members of the Coe Women's Basketball team. We heard of his stroke and wanted to wish him luck in getting better and try to be of some motivation to him. However, he ended up motivating us. Bruce was a strong man and had a HUGE heart! I am so glad that I got to make it to the hospital to meet him because although I didn't know him well or for very long, he changed my life. He taught me that I need to work for what I want and that I should never take no for an answer. I plan to continue to push myself to get better every day in Honor of Bruce. And to his friends and family, I will keep you in my heart and in my prayers.
Bruce and I were teammates at Iowa. Bruce was a great teammate, a fierce competitor and a tough athlete... He did not back down from anything on the field and played with an aggressive attitude. Off the field, a quiet and great person to be around.... Several years ago, I was in town for an Iowa game... a friend of mine pointed him out at a resturant... I snuck up behind him, and tapped on his shoulder... as he turned, I said, " My friend told me you were one heck of a player for the Hawks ". He gave me his intense look as if I were just some smart guy giving him a hard time.. He then recognized me and gave me a smile and big hug.... That was the kind of teammate and person Bruce was.. Very respectful and full of dignity !! I am saddened by his passing... he will be missed but never, ever forgotten !!! I will miss him and may God bless his family... I think God has, as Bruce was able to be in their lives every day..
To Bruce's family I very sorry for your loss. Bruce has been a friend to me and my family since he was in college at U of I. I will always remember his kindness, quit witted sense of humor and most of all the kindness that he showed when both of my sons passed away in 2001 he had know them both since infants. Bruce may be gone to be with the Lord but will never be forgotten.
To Calvin and Family,
Bruce was a wonderful gentle man. Ted worked with him at Hawkeye for years. Our children loved to visit with Bruce every chance they got. He always made them laugh. We will all miss him very much, but we will ALWAYS remember him.
Michelle, Bruce, and Calvin, I'm sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I will always remember Bruce and his sense of humor. I still have that Valentine I got from Bruce and I'm glad I have something to remind of him. I'm glad I got to get to know Bruce and his family in those short months he was up on 6 West Rehab, you will be missed.
Bruce was one of the happiest guys around. He always had a smile on his face when I'd see him. He worked with my dad at Hawkeye years ago. He always called my dad, Vern Slade, his "main man". I'm so very sorry for your loss. I hope your happy memories get you all through this difficult time.
Michelle, Bruce, & Calvin, I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you guys during this difficult time. I was blessed with getting to know Bruce over the last couple of months. His drive for life and motivation was contagious. He touched so many people and will never be forgotten. I am grateful for getting the chance to know him, and grateful for all that he taught me and how he motivated me to be better. Bruce you may have been soft spoken by voice but your determination was louder than life. I will miss your "beep, beep" and will never forget you!
I was lucky enough to meet Bruce through Dell Briggs and Val Barnes about 20 years ago. He was one of the kindest persons I have ever met, always having a smile on his face and a friendly word. He is gone too soon and will be sorely missed.
Bruce had a way of making you feel welcome .We shared many conversations about playing football for the Hawks and watching our sons grow up to play D1 ball..I think he was also proud of the multitude of people he met and grew close to since coming to Iowa.To his family I pray for your peace of mind in knowing that he has gone home to be with God .
Calvin, Bruce, Michelle
May you all find some confort in all the great memories you have of Bruce. He had a personality that was infectious and always brought a smile to me and all those he touched when I had visited him @ St Luke's and throuhgout his life. I always left feeling better about myself. He will be missed by many friends.
Bruce was such an amazing man!!!! We loved him during his time here on Rehab. We know this became a 2nd home for him and Michelle. Michelle, Calvin and Bruce you are in our thoughts and prayers!!! Our hearts are heavy!!!!! May God give you the strength to go on and remember Bruce everyday. We will remember him everytime we pass by 614 and his miraculous recovery he made while he was here.
Michelle, Calvin and Bruce,
. Scriptural Hopes
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of your grief. At times like these, "God is near to those who are broken at heart; And those crushed in spirit he saves." (Psalm 34:18) Death is an enemy, as the Bible states, and soon it will be brought to nothing (1 Cor. 15:26) There will be no more tears, pain, or sorrow, as the former things will be passed away.(Rev. 21:3,4)
I hope these scriptures will bring you a measure of comfort. May your warm memories and sure scriptural hope sustain you at this difficult time.
