Ralph L. Neuzil
1930 - 2011
Condolences
Grandma Loretta Vitosh was a Neuzil. Ralph was a frequent topic of discussion around the dinner table. He touched many lives. He was very thoughtful. Mom and Dad are both 90 years old and are sorry they were unable to attend the funeral. We will miss Ralph and send our sincere condolences.
Given Ralph's physical stature, one would not think that "standing tall" would be a very apt description of him, but in the arena of honesty and integrity, no one could have stood taller than Ralph Neuzil. True to his word without any pretenses or motives. It was always to do business with Ralph as long as you left time for a joke or two. The Bar Association has lost a very respected member.
Ralph always had a story. He was a genuine man and my entire family enjoyed his good sense of humor. We also thought highly of his law practice because of his honesty and work ethic. I hope the Neuzil family can heal through time, and our thoughts and prayers go out to them.

Ralph has been our family lawyer since my grandparents were alive. He always had a story to tell. He will be missed in the area. All the stories he could tell about my grandparents always made us laugh
Ralph was one of a kind and we will all miss his wit and his work ethic and his friendship. He was always willing to help, and by 'helping' he didn't mean getting his picture in the paper as the chairman of the committee; he helped by rolling up his sleeves and doing the hard work. When I was a young lawyer who did not know anything about probate issues, Ralph taught me what I needed to know. The year I was president of the Johnson County Bar association, he set the annual bar picnic on my birthday, cook sauerkraut and pork and had Wayne sing "Happy Birthday" for me. What a treat. Ralph will be remembered by everyone in this community for a thousand little acts of kindness, delivered with no thought of reward for himself. I am so sorry for your loss.
Ralph's strong sense of family, service, commitment and joy will be missed throughout our community. Few in the county can eat barbequed pork without thinking of RALPH's barbeque pork and most of us have experienced his wonderful sense of humor. We are sorry for your loss and hope you will find comfort in your memories.

I will truly miss Dad (Ralph), he WAS a second father to me as I was constantly at there home when I was growing up with my best friend's Terry and John. I think it is impossible to share all the wonderful memories I have of Dad. I just remember enjoying the ability to talk and share our thoughts together of all the things we did over the years. He will be truly missed and all my sympathies go out to the Neuzil family.
ARE THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE RALPH NEUZIL FAMILY
Like so many people I have very fond memories of Ralph. He was a good lawyer and a great person. You felt better for being around him. Ralph was doen to earth, honest and fun. I liked and respected Ralph. I will miss him.
I've known Ralph for years and Tom got to know Ralph during Dad's legal proceedings about 11 years ago. During some very stressful days and after Dad's death Ralph had a good ear and always a good story to tie in with whatever was going on. To your family Ralph, may they always carry good memories of you and to you Ralph my your journey into eternity be blessed and filled with love and sunshine.
To Susan & the rest of the Ralph Neuzil Family, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to you all. I sure enjoyed all my times spent with your Dad and husband. We used to have some great visits at Mercy Hospital Cardiac Rehab, including, and most interesting, about gardening and cooking. Enjoyed the KC/Shriner dinners at the Eagles every year, especially the sauerkraut.
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Ours thoughts and prayers are with your family.
To the Neuzil family. So sorry to hear about Ralph's passing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.
I knew "Papa Smurf" for more than 25 years. He was a good, kind and jovial person. Ralph always had at least one story for every occasion, and was glad to share. He as also an excellent lawyer. He could be seen at the courthouse at least once a week, taking care of some concern for a client. He was not shy to call me with a question, and I was always happy to speak with him. He could be a difficult adversary when angered. But generally his disposition was helpful and nurturing. My days were always happier after visiting with Ralph. I shall miss him terribly.
To the Neuzil family and to cousin Wayne...
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. My mother was Mildred Skriver Parizek and my father was Vernon. Ralph was so good to our entire family.
I feel so very fortunate to have had the pleasure of getting to know Ralph. I always looked forward to his wonderful sauerkraut that he made for the K of C/Shriners Pork Barbeque and the opportunity to tell him how wonderful it was ....he always gave me extra to take home! He was a great man and one that will be missed by all who were lucky enough to get to know him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all his loving family. Rest in Peace, Ralph........
My sympathies to Terrence, who I work with in Johnson County government, and to Arlene and the family. Ralph was a wonderful man, a real, genuine, kind person, and a character with a good natured sense of humor. He and Arlene set an example for us all in raising a close, loving family, passing on to their children the values of serving the community and the public. The cliche, "they broke the mold" fits, and there will never be another Ralph Neuzil. We are fortunate that he left so many good memories behind for us to keep. He made Johnson County a better place in which to live. Thank you, Ralph.

Ralph was not only a devoted attorney but a good friend. He watched our boys grow up and when Kerry was getting married, he brought the pig and the roaster to Tulsa , and made a special event truly wonderful. He was a special person and our hearts go out to Arlene and the family.
We were so sadded to hear of Ralph's passing. I always loved his stories and would walk away with a smile on my face after talking to him. He was one of a kind and will be truly missed by many. Our deepset sympathy to all of you. You're in our thoughts and prayers.

My heart goes out to Susie, Wayne, Terrence and the rest of the family. Ralph was a good man and a good husband, father and friend. I pray that he is not at rest.
Ralph was a good friend of my grandpa, Paul Peterson. I have many memories of Ralph from when I was younger and grandpa would take us around town and we would sometimes stop by and see Ralph. It was explained to me that he was our lawyer, and a good friend of grandpa's. Ralph read the obit for my grandpa's funeral in 2008 and my family and I will be forever grateful for that. My fondest memories of Ralph were when he used to dress up as Santa Clause and visit my cousins and I at our Grandparents house on Christmas Eve. We were so excited to actually get to see Santa Clause and we were always challenging him on where exactly he parked his reindeer. One year, I piped up and said, "Hey, you're not Santa, you're Ralph Neuzil, our lawyer!" Ralph quickly replied ".... and you're Dennis the Menace!" It was true... Thanks for being so good to our family Ralph. Say hi to grandpa for me.
RALPH SERVED THE HOUSTON FAMILY FOR MANY YEARS STARTING WITJH MY PARENTS, GLENN F. AND VICTORIA HOUSTON, MY BROTHER RICHARD F. HOUSTON, AND MYSELF. EVEN THOUGH WE LIVE IN TEXAS WE RETURNED TO IOWA CITY A FEW TIMES SEEKING RALPH'S HELP ON A BUSINESS TRANSACTION THAT HE WAS ABLE TO SETTLE FOR US.
THE DEPOT WAS ALWAYS AN INTERESTING VISIT AND BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES OF SEVERAL ROCK ISLAND TRAIN TRIPS.
WE WILL ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL FOR RALPH'S PROFESSIONAL HELP TO OUR FAMILIES.
GLENN PHILIP AND DORIS HOUSTON
Ralph was a friend as well as an attorney to my parents (Earl & Arlene Graham. I remember the garden he had at my Mother's/Grandmother's property. He enjoyed his garden. He was so much to his family, to his friends, to his clients & business associates and to his community. Ralph was remarkable!!

I also speak on behalf of my current pastor, Rev. Orlando R. Dial and the congregation of Bethel A.M.E. Church of Iowa City, Iowa as we together hold Attorney Neuzil in high regard as our friend and we likewise convey our sincere condolences.

Dear Terry and family: I am so very sorry to learn of the death of your irreplaceable Dad. He is loved and revered by many, and will be greatly missed. I had one of my first cases with Ralph twenty-two years ago, and when we met he was in his stocking feet and gave me his detailed and memorable medical history. We didn't discuss the legal matter for quite a while. I loved being in his company-especially when we were in his office. His Optimist barbecues were like no other. What an exceptional human being he was. My sympathy and condolences to all of you. Susan Frye.
Long-time neighbors are saddened by the Neuzil family's tremendous loss. Bob and I have enjoyed many of Ralph's infamous, Optimist cookouts.
Ralph was certainly one in a million guy. Hope he passed his talent for sauerkraut on to his sons. My sympathy to all of the family.
Gary & Terrence, and the rest of the Neuzil family,
I just heard about Ralph's untimely passing. I will be out of town and unable to attend any service for him, which is very unfortunate. I wish I could be there to show my appreciation for someone who deserves all the praise that he is receiving. Ralph always had a smile and a story and was the consummate lawyer, there to help when called on. In an age when being a lawyer is viewed with cynicism, Ralph is the standard bearer for the profession. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. My condolences to his family, friends and admirers.
My sincere condolences to the Neuzil family on the death of Ralph.
I had the priviledge of living next to the Ralph Neuzil family from 1970-1981. Being a kid then a teen, I always enjoyed walking my/our family dog when Ralph was outside cooking a hog(sock footed regardless of weather) or in their back yard with his coon dogs. Ralph's humor and humanitarism was passed down to the kids and that is indeed special to see.

My deepest sympathy to the Neuzil family. Ralph was as unique and as important as any Iowa City resident who ever lived here. I cherish the fond memories I had in conversations with him, his wit, and his insight. I enjoyed teaching his children at City High School and I took great pride and enjoyment in watching these "young adults" mature and grow into unique and special citizens on their own. The Neuzil family was fortunate to have such great parents and I am sure they have realized that time and time again over the past years. We are all going to dearly miss Ralaph Neuzil.
We've been neighbors with Ralph and Arlene for two decades now. I'll miss the "hey doc!" salutations, the funny stories and the wonderful barbeque smells from the pig roaster in the driveway. Ralph was the genuine article and it won't be the same on Mayfield Road without him.
Our best to you, Arlene (and Terry and Wayne and the rest of the family).
Ralph was my Uncle and I have such great memories from many occasions, but mostly of Christmas Eve's past spent with the family at Grandma Stika's house. He had such a wonderful sense of humor and passed that great quality on to his children. Our thoughts are with the entire Neuzil family.
Tami and Todd Farrell
I will always remember being invited to have soup with Mr. Neuzil. We were working through estate matters in his office and it was time for lunch.
My life was enriched knowing Ralph.
My condolences to Terrence and all the family. Ralph was an original. Earlier this month he spoke as he and Arlene were inducted to the Johnson County Democrats Hall of Fame. He recounted stories from 50+ years of practice and afterward told me stories about Ed O'Connor, a local attorney who lived across the street from me as I grew up. I fondly remember the passion Ralph showed as I watched him before County boards arguing for his clients. He will be missed by me and many others.
Neuil Family-Always will remember how Ralph would come up to our business in his stocking feet and always had a good story to tell. He will be greatly missed by many people including everyone at Carter Ford,Inc. Please accept our sincere sympathy.
My deepest sympathies go out to the Neuzil family in the loss of Ralph. Ralph was my father-in-law when Terry and I were married, from 1995-2010. I couldn't have asked for a better father-in-law. Ralph always had a funny story or joke to share and could always make me smile. He was a fabulous chef; his barbecued pork, sauce, and baked beans were by far the best I've ever had and probably ever will have. He taught his sons to cook as well, and his cooking legacy will live on through them. Ralph often took pictures at family events and celebrations. Each time he took a photo, he would ask, "Did it flash?" These are just a few fond memories of Ralph that I will always treasure. He will be greatly missed by so many.
Gary, my thoughts are with you and your family. Your dad sounds like a great guy! Let me know if you need anything!
our deepest condolence to the family. We have known Ralph most of our
lives. He has coon hunted and went fishing with me many times,He always shared the best stories. He was a wonderful friend and he will be greatly missed by all of us.
Even though I didn't live close...I have such fond memories...my last is him giving me the change from the grocery store the last time I saw him..I was 26.....and still so special. Will always love and miss him!! My thoughts are with my Grandma! Love you!
Sincere condolences for your loss . . . we are truly saddened by a great man's passing. Ralph had a smile for everyone, and treated all with repect and kindness. My thoughts are with you.
I would like to express my sympathy to Ralph's family. He was a wonderful, kind hearted, hardworking man. He was our family lawyer up until his retirement in December. He was INSTRUMENTAL in helping my Aunt and Uncle when they sold their family farm last May, due to my Uncle's declining health. He was also always a familar and friendly fixture at mass at St Wenceslaus. I had the pleasure of getting to know Terrence when I was younger through my involvment with the Jaycees and with my work at KCJJ and I can see where Terrence gets his kindness, and hard-work ethic from. Praying that God will be with your family Ralph during this time. Thank you for all that you did for everyone whose life you touched be it through your law practice, through the numerous non-profit groups that you were a member of, or as a member of St Wenceslaus.
My heartfelt condolences go out to the family. We all know what you have lost in him. My life has been made better by knowing him. He was my friend and I will miss him.
My Father, Bill Doherty, recently passed away. Mr Neuzil, as difficult as it must have been for him attended both the visitation and funeral mass. He had such a nice way of lifting my spirits with a heartwarming story of the two of them in their military days.......
We are sending our condolences to you all in your loss. Ralph was a wonderful man in this community and will be missed by many.
