Obituary of Richard W. Fischer

Richard W. "Dick" Fischer, 80, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m., Friday, November 18, 2011 at the Gay & Ciha Funeral Service in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice. Online condolences may be sent to Dick's family through the web @www.gayandciha.com. Richard W. Fischer was born March 13, 1931 in Walcott, Iowa; son of Walter and Vivian (Gustafson) Fischer. He grew up in Eastern Iowa and on August 24, 1951 married Mary Jones in Davenport, Iowa. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Iowa City where they've lived since 1953. Dick worked for Iowa-Illinois Gas & Electric from 1953 until his retirement in 1986. After retirement, he and Mary sold their house and spent 13 years "RV-ing" across the country. He enjoyed time outdoors camping and fishing and also loved Hawkeye football, NASCAR and old westerns. His family includes his wife, Mary; daughter, Corinne "Corky" (Dennis) Martin of Wellman, IA; sons, Richard Jr. of Iowa City and Steven of Prescott, AZ; sisters, Patricia Maule of Aledo, IL, Lois (John) Ludtke of Davenport, IA, and Marjorie (Don) Neipert of Wilton, IA; and brother, Robert (Helen) Fischer of Nashville, TN. Richard was preceded in death by his parents.
