Himie Voxman
1912 - 2011
Condolences
My undergraduate years at the UI were Himie's last years as Director of the School of Music. He and Lois were lovely people, so warm, kind and supportive. Himie ran the music school like a conservatory and set the performance bar very high...and we matched it. I am forever grateful for his excellent leadership and big heart. Rest well, Himie.
Dearest Himie,
Thank you, Himie, for your countless contributions to woodwind literature, the musical arts, and for your many musical gifts.
He was an inspiration in the art of the clarinet and in personal focus on a life's ambition. He was a unique individual and a gift to us all.

Will missed seeing Himie at New Horizon band and also at Community Band. I remember when I was in high school in the 40's and he judged at some of my music contests. I was very impressed then and am still in awe of him. God surely has a specialweyz place for him.
I will always remember Himie and Lois. and what warm, kind and caring human beings they were. My most fond memory of them was how they responded to my request that my mother, who was very ill and about to graduate from SUI, be given a waver so that she could graduate even though she could not complete her requirement to give a recital. There was absolutely no hesitation on Himie's part, and he made all the arrangements for her to graduate before she passed away. He never knew how very much it meant to her and all of her family, but his kindness will always be remembered.God bless and comfort the Voxman boys' families in this time of their grief and sadness.
I would like to express my sincere sympathy to the entire Voxman family at this very difficult time. I am the President of the Friends of the Drake Public Library in Centerville, IA. I have talked to James on the telephone regarding Himie but unfortunately I never had the privilege of meeting Himie. I have a friend that lives at Oak Knoll and she often spoke highly of him. There are many items and books at the Drake library that would not be available to us if it were not for Himie's generosity. We have a plaque with his picture hanging on the wall in the main area of the library to show our appreciation for his generosity.
As Dean of the UI College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, I knew Himie and admired him tremendously, and felt honored to be his friend. He was instrumental in making our School of Music one of the finest in the nation, and was truly a legend here at our University. I could always count on seeing him at School of Music faculty recitals, starting in Clapp recital hall and most recently at other venues. He always would give me little pointers to help me appreciate the music more - regardless of the instrument! I last saw him at the Dance Gala in the company of Helen Chadima, and he was joking about misplacing his coat, but had clearly enjoyed the Dance enormously.
I will miss his friendship and wisdom, as well as seeing him around the community at many arts events. He had an infectious love of life that impressed all who met him. His legacy will remain strong here at Iowa.
Dear Bill and Jim and your families;
I want to send along our sympathies on the loss of your dad. I have many fond memories of both your dad and your mother. Your mother gave me lessons on the violin at your home. Your parents were good friends of my parents for all the years that they lived in Iowa City. It sounds like your dad was still quite active until he died. What a wonderful life and career that he had.
Sincerely, Fran Luper Potter and family.
My condolences to Bill and Jim and families.
I had the honor of living in the Voxman house during Spring Semester 1972, taking care of the furnace, yard, and house. I had the honor of living in the house with Himie and Lois for about a week at the beginning of the semester and about a week at the end.
My footprints are more on Himie's shoulders, in a professional sense, than on those of any other person, living or passed. Himie's recommendations got me into the university teaching career that I now enjoy, and his wise counsel guided me for many years. Since Lois's passing, Himie and I have visited regularly, and I had the great pleasure of visiting him in Iowa City on several occasions.
Please know that Himie and Lois were both great friends, and I do miss them both.

Please know that your family has our deepest sympathy. Our son had the honor of attending the university after graduating from Iowa City West. He was in the music program and was extremely fortunate to have received a partial music scholarship in the name of Mr. Voxman. We became familiar and knew about all of his generous contributions to the community. Please know we appreciate your family very much. With sympathy. Lori Fiebelkorn and family
Our sincere sympathy at the loss of a true Iowa City legend and life long friend of my parents. He and my dad (Chris Schrock), a symphony peer, played quartets several times in our living room on Lexington Ave., and they allowed me to stay and listen. He and Lois will be remembered in I.C. as a great couple with fondness, respect, & appreciation, and I'll remember him as the, always, kind man to the kid I was. Sincerely, Kathy Olin
Himie and Lois were fantastic people.
My prayers go out to the Voxman family in the loss of a dynamic individual and musician. Our son took private clarinet lessons from Himie while attending school in Iowa City. He is now in his final year of graduate studies in saxophone music performance at Champaign, IL, and prepping for doctorate studies next year. He is very fortunate to have met and worked with Himie as a young musician. I'm sure there are many more that will hope to carry on parts of his musical legacy.
I had the honor of being Himie's companion at Oaknoll for the last two and a half years. He was such a sweet, caring man and I will miss spending time with him. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
I am very fotunate to have reconnected with my great uncle Himie this past summer.I live in Evaston,Il. Would like info about service there & celebrations in Iowa City. Ruthann Medville, grandaguer of Max& /ruby Chapman of Max & Ruby Chapman
With much sympathy to the family, everyone who knew Mr. Voxman has memories forever. He always put other people's well being as his first priority. When he walked down the halls of the Music Building, he seemed to know by osmosis the faculty or students who needed a bit of personal attention that day. He never lost his sense of humor or his witty come-backs. Even last August when I mentioned to him that he had another birthday coming up, he replied, "Lois, you keep better track of that than I do." When I first met Mr. Voxman, I was applying for a job as his secretary. Once we started to work together, it became obvious that we were working as friends doing things for each other, not necessarily boss to employee, but person to person. We will definitely miss one terrific person who shaped the lives of many others.
My deep condolences go out to Mr. Voxman's family. He was a much-loved presence in the School of Music, always courteous and pleasant. I don't think I ever saw him without a smile on his face and a humorous twinkle in his eyes. It was always delightful to see him and we have missed him since he moved to Oaknoll Retirement Community. Rest in peace Mr. Voxman.
