Obituary of Dorothy Mae Allen
Dorothy M. Allen, 86 of Tiffin, died Sunday, November 27, 2011, at her home in Tiffin.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 1, 2011, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin, with burial at the Oak Hill Cemetery near Tiffin. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church in Tiffin. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Dorothy's memory to Grace United Methodist Church or Tiffin First Responders. Dorothy Mae (Gentry) Allen was born June 5, 1925, at Lohrville, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Jocena (Johnson) Gentry. Following graduation from Rinard High School in 1943, she attended and received her degree in Business Management from Tobin Business College in Ft. Dodge. On December 16, 1945, she was united in marriage to Carroll Allen in Lohrville. For many years the couple farmed in the Tiffin community until after Carroll's death in 1989, when Dorothy moved into Tiffin.
She was employed by the University of Iowa Hospitals as an office coordinator in the Department of Medicine for over 25 years retiring in 1987. She was a very active member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin; she had also served on the election board. Dorothy enjoyed playing cards, bingo, traveling and coffee clutches with her friends and neighbors. She was devoted to her family, and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and their families!
Her family includes her daughter and son-in-law, Darla and Jim Bartels; her son, Mick Allen all of Tiffin; grandchildren, Steve and Brooke Bartels of Tiffin, Cody (Kim) Allen of Eldridge; Travis (Danielle) Allen of Tiffin; great-grandchildren, Christopher Bacher of Iowa City and Addison and Caden Allen of Eldridge; brother-in-law, Ned (Ann) Allen of Tiffin; and Dorothy's feline companion, Kitty Kat.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Carroll; infant daughter, sister, Maxine (Lloyd) Wells and two brothers, Mick (Byrle) Gentry and Don Gentry.
