Obituary of June L. O'Brien
June L. O'Brien, 96, of Iowa City, and formerly of the Cosgrove area, died Thursday, January 26, 2012, at the Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center in West Branch.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 3, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City (Sunday parking ordinance will be in effect for the streets around the church). Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery (old section) in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service where a parish vigil service will be shared at 3:30 p.m. additional visitation will be held at the Church one hour prior to the services on Friday. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in her memory to Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center or Iowa City Hospice. June L. Olson was born June 27, 1915, in Tipton, Iowa the daughter of Oscar and Mary Ann (McCune) Olson. She was united in marriage to William P. O'Brien on January 4, 1933, in Iowa City. The couple farmed for many years in the Cosgrove area, until moving into Iowa City in 1975. She also worked at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City for many years. June was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City, and had been a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Cosgrove, where they also farmed for many years. She was one of the ladies of the Windham Homemakers social circle. Junehe enjoyed cooking, sewing, and her artwork in painting, but most dear to her was her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and now her great-great-granddaughter, these were the twinkle in her eye!
Her family includes her children, Marilyn Palmer of Windsor, MO; Karen Leming (Brian) of Las Vegas, NV; Dale O'Brien (Shirley) of Iowa City; Cheryl Stevens (Randy) of Iowa City, Karleen O'Brien of Iowa City; and Joe O'Brien (Brenda Miller) of Solon; 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter; sister, Ruth Potter of Iowa City; and a brother, Roy Olson (Marie) of Oxford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, 3 daughters, Audrey, Barbara, and Eleanor; son, Darrell; sister, Velta Donham; and a son-in-law, Frank Palmer.
