Condolences
So sorry to hear of Terry's passing; blessings to family & friends in their loss. I met Terry at Uptown Bill's in Iowa City. He was a good steward of his gifts and will be missed. "Every noble life leaves the fibre of it interwoven forever in the work of the world." (John Ruskin)
We are sad to hear of your loss. Our hearts and prayers are with you all
To Terry's family-
I am was so saddened to hear of Terry's passing. He was a very special person and one of the most cheerful, upbeat people I know and especially with regard to his disability and its health consequences. I served on the Lake Pointe board with Terry for many years and his insight and leadership was instrumental in his role as President of the Lake Pointe board.
I always looked forward to see him tooling around in his wheel chair on those sun filled days. I know you will all miss him very much but so will we. He filled a space in our lives and hearts that we were not aware that we were missing.
Thank you, Terry, for introducing me to the disability movement in Iowa. As a newcomer from Michigan in search of a way to get involved in REAL disability rights advocacy, I was so lucky to meet you early on. You've been a strong, consistent voice for years, touching the lives of so many people in important ways. We are better off for the time you spent on this earth.
He made me feel at home whenever I didn't. Thanks for being a good man and mentor.
We met Terry when we went to our first association meeting for our Condo in Iowa City - because of him I joined the board - Terry impressed the heck out of us for his fortitude, his courage, and kindness - he always had a smile for everyone - and was just one of those really nice people one meets in life. We will miss him very much - somehow not seeing him parked in his wheel chair outside is going to be very sad when we return to Iowa this year.
Our sincere smypathy to his family.....

I came to know Terry via his role on the Olmstead Consumer Taskforce at the State level, which I staffed from 2001 - 2007. I grew to know him as a friend and a courageous person with a disability and passionate advocate for himself and others in the disability community as well as a political activist. He and I once traveled together, to an Olmstead national conference in Washington, DC. I remember sharing delicious chocolate chip cookies with him on the flight. I remember how brave I thought he was, to permit me to supervise the flight crew as they put his wheelchair in the belly of the plane! I was also so impressed with his ability to meet new people, including new caregivers and make them feel immediately at ease! He was brave, he cared deeply about disability issues for all, and his heart was a beautiful thing! Our loss, and that of the disability community, is great, and he will be missed!
Sharon, Guy, Todd, Jay,
So sorry to the family for your loss and especially my good friend Todd. You are all in my prayers.
You and I started our adventure at CDD together on the same day! I oh so enjoyed working with you, but I remember most our talks about sports, music and beer. As you paved the way for many down on earth, I have faith you are doing the same in Heaven. I will forever regret not visiting with you more. I will miss you greatly! Brooke
My thoughts and prayers are with all of Terry's family and friends. I am saddened and devastated at our loss of Terry. In my mind and heart, I know the long-term care system in Iowa failed him and I know he would want us to share his story and keep up the fight for independence for all people! Terry, you were such a good friend to me, and a great colleague! You always made me smile, and I greatly admired all the things you did to advocate for disability rights. You were on the Board and Chairperson of UpTown Bills Coffee Shop; on the Board and President of Access2Independence (the CIL in Iowa City); on the Johnson County Para-transit Advisory Board; active participant on the Johnson County Task Force on Aging; on the Board of Extend the Dream Foundation; you hosted a weekly tv show on Public Access TV Channel 13 in Iowa City, on and for persons with disabilities; you were Vice Chairperson of the Johnson County Mental Health and Disabilities Service Council; and you were an actor performing with Combined Efforts Theater, a theater group for persons with disabilities. You were involved with Gary McDermott, Mitch Swanson, and I in beginning the initial advocacy at the Iowa State Capitol to get a bill on Refueling Assistance for people with disabilities. You were also a former SILC Council Member many years ago, and you were being considered by the Governor for re-appointment to the SILC right before you passed. These are only a few examples of the many things you did as a disability rights advocate. Terry, I love you know that your spirit and life force will be greatly missed by all of us and know that we will continue the fight for independence and choice for all! You are free now of this earth, but I know you will be watching us all from above, and still helping us when you can from the beyond! I will never forget you, my friend rest in peace
A very sincere and heartfelt offering to you during this season. I knew Terry pre-accident and appreciated him in so many ways. I remember rides in the morning to school, playing church league basketball together and many nights working together with him at HyVee. Nothing but good memories and great things to say about him. The years separated us for sure but I have thought about him many times and wondered how he was. I would find things on the Internet about him and keep abreast of him that way. I always hoped to get in touch one day.....I wish I had.
So sorry for your loss, thoughts and heart goes out to you all.

You always made me smile when I came to Uptown Bill's when you filled the place with positivity. I was a new volunteer to Uptown Bill's and you made me feel immediately welcomed and accepted. I am going to miss hearing your stories on open mic night and how they always made me laugh. We were on opposite teams once on, "The Smartest Iowan" and even though you won, I still had a lot of fun. I am going to miss seeing your face at Uptown Bill's. Thank you for never failing to brighten up my day.
It was of great pleasure to of known this wonderful man. He taught me something. helped me with many things. always a good listener. Terry will be greatly missed by many of us with disabilities.
Terry was never limited in his fullness of and for life. That was his most admirable quality my sister Starla always talked about when she would speak about Terry. I admired his unquenchable fierce determination to live life to the absolute fullest. During our mother's last year or two he was constant in his love and support of her facing her own battle with restricted mobility and independence. Thank you Terry for loving Barb Elliott so much that you truly were her light of hope that she needed. Thank you for being my sister Starla's soul mate. She and you were truly knit together in heart. Fly free our dear friend!
A great guy with a resilient spirit, a great sense of humor, and an awesome ponytail. Terry took his own adversity and turned it into advocacy for the benefit of others. I'm sure by now he has traded his earth-bound wheelchair for for a heavenly Harley and is off on an incredible eternal roadtrip. Vroom, vroom, Terry - we will miss you.
Losing you has been incredibly painful. We shared so much love, joy, laughter, and fun over these past 12 years. You have been such a bright light in my world. Now it seems darker and not as safe as when you were here. You have been my refuge and my soul mate. I treasure those memories of the times when we shut out the world and could just be together. I will miss you incredibly, but know that you are free again. I will love you forever with all my heart. Fly free, my love
