Obituary of Eleanor Mae Doling
Eleanor M. Doling, age 80, lifetime resident of Iowa City died Saturday, February 4, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
A celebration of Eleanor's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, with burial to follow at the West Branch Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Eleanor's memory. Eleanor was born February 10, 1931, in Johnson County to Gale and Lena (Miller) Gritton. She graduated in 1948 from Springdale High School in Springdale, Iowa. She attended UNI (then Iowa State Teacher's College). She taught in rural Johnson County schools then substituted in the Iowa City Schools. She was employed for almost thirty years at the University of Iowa Law Library, retiring in 1997.
She was a fifty-year member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa City. She had served on the Cancer Board and been active with support groups for diabetes. She had lived with diabetes for 52 years.
Eleanor was married May 28, 1950, to Thomas G. Doling. To this union were born three children: Patricia Ellen Doling, Iowa City, Terry Thomas Doling (Barbara) of Ankeny, Susan Grace (Larry) Seaton of Iowa City. In addition five grandchildren survive including: Micheal, Alissa Doling, and Kelli (Andy) Katzman, plus Brittany and Stephanie Seaton, and one great-granddaughter, Olivia Katzman. Brothers: Earl Thomas (Virginia) Gritton of Madison, WI, Larry Gale Gritton (Jean) of Manchester, IA. Sisters: Marilyn (Fred) Charbon of Iowa City and Judith (Jerry) Cwiertnia of Newport Beach, CA, plus a nephew Ronald Moll of Spokane, WA and numerous other nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas G. Doling, her parents Gale and Lena Gritton, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law Kenneth and Patricia (Doling) Moll of Spokane, WA and a nephew Gale Charbon of Tiffin, IA.
