A while back I held a position at the Alzheimer's Association National Capital Chapter in Virginia where I met Mr. Mac Showers who was a volunteer and supporter of the organization in honor of his wife who passed away from Alzheimer's. I was briefly introduced to Mr. Showers and saw him in the office once in a while. I had seen on various documents that he was a military veteran (RADM) but I never really got why Mr. Showers was as important as he was.
Until some years later- I had moved to another city, lost ties with the association, and went on vacation with my family to Hawaii in 2011. There my family and I took a tour of the Pearl Harbor site at Oahu and took the audio tour of the Pearl Harbor Museum. During the tour the audio track introduced a Rear Admiral Donald Mac Showers and he began to speak recounting his story of the Pearl Harbor events in 1941. I recognized his voice and his name and was SO AMAZED that I knew this man. Although I didn't realize at the time what an honor it was to know him. I regret that now. But I hope that I never forget Mr. Showers and his contribution to our country and his devotion to his wife and community. He will be missed.
