George E. "Tommy" Thompson III
1926 - 2013
Condolences
I'll sure miss my Buddy. Tommy had long been a Hawkeye when I became one in 1965. We enjoyed a lot of good times together most recently at Football practices. As you sit with The Lord keep your ears open on Saturdays as Dolph and I will bring you the action over the air waves, Tommy. The Hawks have lost part of their heart. God Bless Ed Podolak
I had at least a hundred conversations with Tommy, and I don't talk a hundred times to anyone I don't want to be around. You could tease him, he could tease you back, and you both always walked away laughing. He was a genuine character, and to me that's high praise.
I worked at Finkbine Golf Course while in High School. Tommy always brought in doughnuts before playing the usual Sunday morning golf game with Doug Goodfellow and Dick Forstner. Tommy always spoke so highly of my father, Sharm. Tommy, I will never forget you. You always brightened my day. Tommy Thompson golf stories shall be remembered forever.
I am so sorry to hear about Tommy; he was a great Hawkeye, a very special person. He will be missed, Football practice won't be the same without him.
My wife is Tommy's first cousin. I'll never forgive her for not introducing me to Tommy sooner. We married in 1971, and it was about 10 years after that when she intoduced me to Tommy, as her "cousin from Iowa City". I asked him if he ever attended any Hawkeye games. He gave a very surprised expression, and said, "hell yes !", I've been to hundreds of football games, I'm a personal friend of Dan Gable, I used to caddie for Nile Kinnick when I was a kid", and proceeded to rattle off several more examples of his Hawkeye loyalty. I was very stunned & impressed. Over the years, Tommy has been very generous to me, inviting me to Iowa sporting events + providing my kids with Hawkeye memorabelia. One of my favorite things to do when watching Iowa basketball or wrestling on tv was to try to spot Tommy in the stands. Watching Iowa games on tv will never be the same.
Thank yo for the good times and memories at Hawkeye events, golf outings, and across the diner table. Your comments and advice where always considered seriously because they where always from the heart. The Hawkeye's have lost their biggest fan and friend. I will remember you always.
We met Tommy a little over a year ago when we moved in to the house next to his. He immediately came over to welcome us with a gift to Fareway "the best food store in town" he said. During our short time knowing Tommy we enjoyed spending time with him and eating ice cream. He always had many flavors for my boys to choose from and would wow them with how many scoops he'd put on their cones. He always had so many stories to share with me that often most of his ice cream would melt before it was eaten. I enjoyed spending time with him and hearing his stories. We will miss him! We will always have him in the back of our minds whenever we think of Hawkeye sports. He was their biggest fan!
Hi, I was extremely sad to hear of Tommy's passing. My prayers are with his family. I first knew of Tommy after the reseating at Kinnick. He sat right in front of my husband, Brent. For the first couple seasons he seemed to be a gruff man with his headphones on complaining about the calls etc. As the years went on he warmed up to us. He started visiting with us more and we knew he liked us when one year he turned around and offered me and my friends some of his Hershey Nuggets. It then became a ritual for us that at half time he would turn around and offer us some. One year I received a special pecan turtle he got just for me. He became a good friend and we looked forward to seeing him. Always the first one there all bundled up against the cold. I did Kiss his cheek a few times when there was a great play or we won! I think the banter between Brent and Tommy always calmed both of them down when the games were intense. I will really miss him sitting in front of us.

My family and I go back a long way with Tommy...back to the driving range by the airport where my sister, Judy worked forTommy and Kme
What a Great friend. When I moved back to IC after College, I started playing golf with Tommy. Not only did we play a lot of golf together, but we also traveled to Iowa sporting events often. I don't think there will ever be a bigger fan of Hawkeye Sports than Tommy. I always enjoyed going to his home, it was like a museum of Hawkeye memorabilia, he had it all. Living in Dallas, I would only see Tommy during my short trips home, usually for Iowa sporting events. Tommy brought tiers to my eyes when he spoke at my fathers wake--- he finished by saying "he felt like he had two additional sons", my brother and I. I know Mike and I have always felt the same about Tommy.
"Terrible" as he was known to his close golfing buddies, was a great friend. Kinnick Stadium, Carver Arena and Finkbine Golf Course won't be the same! I send my condolences and best wishes to all of Tommy's family and friends.
THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR KIND THOUGHTS. MY SISTER AND I SPOKE WITH MANY OF OUR FATHER'S FRIENDS AND FAMILY. HIS FRIENDSHIPS WERE VERY BROAD, FROM WORK, GOLF, CHURCH AND HIS MOST FANATICAL IOWA ATHLETICS. OUR FATHER WAS FEROCIOUSLY INDEPENDENT, PROUD AND PLEASED HE COULD REMAIN IN THE HOME OUR MOTHER'S FATHER BUILT IN THE LATE 40'S. HE DID SO WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF HIS MANY FRIENDS AND CONTINUED AN ACTIVE SCHEDULE OF HAWKEYE SPORTS AND BOOSTER FUNCTIONS.
We will miss Tommy's friendship and loyalty to the Hawkeyes. Helping him get to Hawkeye events and q'back club the last several years was never a burden but always a time of remembering some past event and trying to beat him in the weekly q'back club pool.
What a friend and what a guy!
We so enjoyed having Tommy and K. when they came for the Ohio State games or the Penn State games. Tommy was like a little kid when he met Joe Paterno. However, he was so disappointed to many times when Ohio State beat him beloved Hawkeyes. So were we!
Thank you for all the nice and entertaining stories about Dad. We both have enjoyed reading the stories and hearing them thru our many phone calls to friends. We are realizing just how many wonderful lives our father has touched over his 86 years. Thank you Tami (Thompson) Rinehart and Steve Thompson
I will miss Tommy very much. He was a great friend. He loved everybody except cowboys wearing orange. He had an almost perfect memory of the many football games and wrestling matches he had seen. We would talk about current and future Hawkeyes at length. Wrestling recruits that were coming and still in high school were reviewed and their remaining matches discussed and analyzed to compare them with past wrestlers.
He could mesmerize me with stories. Once we drove non-stop back together from Penn State where Iowa had just won the NCAA wrestling championship. we talked the whole way and neither of us were aware just how long we had driven when we arrived at his relative's house in Elgin. We were still not through then. We talked for a long time the next day.
He was funny, engaging, loyal, classy, and made anyone who knew him a better person because he was their friend.
His demise will leave a very big hole in my life.
I, along with many, many other people loved him!
I was sorry to hear of Tommy's death. It was a priviledge to get to know him at Quarterback Club. Tommy was, of course, a great Hawkeye--more more significantly, a good man. I'm sorry for your loss. Pat
Uncle Tommy took me golfing in 1959 at the age of 12. I hit 3 balls in the pond before I quit listening to my Uncle. I struck the 4th ball like a baseball and it cleared the pond. Uncle Tommy got mad because I hit the ball SO hard. But, I cleared the pond and saved Uncle Tommy- who knows how many more golf balls. Met T on golf trip to Ireland;was with him @ Iowa vs Wisc when they shared Big 10 Championship. He was a gentle soul and a man with a big heart. We had a kindred sprit and a great sense of humor. I am blessed to have known him as a friend.
My sympathy to Tommy's family. I enjoyed our visits when he would come into the St. Mary's office to schedule memorial masses for Charlotte. He was a faith filled man in every way. To his wife and family, to the Hawkeyes and to God.
I was a member of the PG (pre - Gable) Iowa Wrestling team. Tommy used to show up in the training room with apples for the basketball players. I5UAC I'd make him give the wrestlers an apple. I feel a little responsible for making him a wrestling fan. Iowa lost arguably its most loyal fan.
It's been a sad week for our family. Tommy T was such a good friend to all of us...like a grandpa to our kids. Loved talking with him over the years at Finkbine. Also enjoyed watching him blush up when my wife would say something inappropriate and he would look around like "did she really just say that"? We are happy that he is with K now and will think of him often on our mission trip to Haiti next week which he of course helped support...he was such a generous friend to everyone and we wish we could be in IC to celebrate his life. God Bless Tommy and K.
To the Thompson family, we were very sad to here of Tommy's passing. We sat behind him in church most Sundays and would usually have a short discussion of the previous Hawkeye win or loss. You could tell the losses were painful for him. Our thoughts and prayers for your family.
