I first met Harold working as a bus driver for Iowa City Coach Company. My dad, John Kauffman, was shop foreman there. Harold was friendly with everyone, and spent a lot of time talking and joking with the shop guys. Harold and my dad shared the same birth date, May 22. At Iowa City Coach, if they knew your birthday, you could be pretty certain they would get together in the shop and sing Happy Birthday to you! I had the privilege more than once of having Harold help sing happy birthday to me. And got to return the favor several times - even bringing cake and ice cream in for Harold and my dad to share with everyone. Harold kind of took me and my daughter Sierra Mae under his wing and told me that I reminded him of his granddaughter - He holds a special place in my heart and in Sierra Mae's heart. Goodbye Harold, we'll see you again in heaven.
