Obituary of Velma M. Brcka
Velma M. Brcka, 95, of Iowa City, died Monday, May 25, 2015 at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City.
Funeral mass will be 10 a.m., Friday, May 29, 2015, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Steven Witt officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:30-7 p.m., Thursday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City where a vigil service will take place just prior, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Velma's memory to Regina Foundation or Iowa City Hospice.
Velma Mary Yeggy was born July 2, 1919, in Riverside, IA, the daughter of Joseph and Rose (Beatch) Yeggy. She graduated from Riverside High School and received a teaching certificate from Cornell Colege in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. She then taught in country schools before marrying and starting her family.
Velma married Victor E. Dvorsky on June 10, 1941 in Solon, IA. Victor died June 17, 1943 at the age of 26 following a tractor accident, leaving Velma and his two daughters Rosemary and Janice. She married Ivan E. Miller on May 27, 1947, in Iowa City. Ivan died at the age of 60 from a stroke while delivering mail to his patrons on April 1, 1975, leaving Velma and their two daughters, Susan and Laura.
Following Ivan's death, she enjoyed working as a secretary in the Music department at Iowa City High School and worked for Regina High School in the business office before her retirement in 1980.
Velma married Leonard R. Brcka on January 12, 1980 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. They enjoyed playing bridge, ballroom dancing, cruises and travelling around the world. They shared 35 years until her death late Monday evening, May 25, 2015.
Velma was a member of St. Mary's Church in Iowa City and the Altar & Rosary Society. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, reading, crosswords puzzles, following the Hawkeyes, traveling to visit relatives in Canada and France, and especially spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Velma also loved nature; she knew the names of all the flowers. Near the end of her life, she found pleasure in watching the birds outside her windows.
Her family includes her husband, Leonard; daughters, Rosemary Mason of Morgan Hill, CA, Janice Quinn and her husband, Jay Adams of Coralville, IA, Susan Mashaw and her husband, Howard Roerig of Sedalia, CO, and Laura Scholten and her husband, Alvin of Redmond, WA; five grandchildren, Katherine Dumovic, Dawn Wyatt, Angela Herron, Billy Mason and David Mason; nine great-grandchildren; step-sons, David J. Brcka and his wife, Rita of Waukee, IA, Gary D. Brcka of Casselberry, FL; step-daughter, Carolyn Schelling, and her husband, Warren of, Albuquerque, NM; six step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and four brothers, Bernard, Leonard, Wilfred and Hubert and step-grandson, Bobby Schelling.
