Donald J. "Don" Tvedte
1925 - 2013
Condolences
Just found this a year and a half later and it brought up some memories. I attended Lucas 1963-67 and remember my teacher, the custodian, and Mr. Tvedte. One year I missed the Basic Skills test, and had to make it up in his office. I remember being in awe that the Principal would be so kind and take so much time to make sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed. He was always smiling! Wow - must be a special person to remember him 45 years later. Thank you
When I think of Mr Tvedte, the words gentle and kind come to mind. Our boys
Eric and Brian went to Lucas and when I told them of his passing, they both said , "He was a nice man and a good principal."
With deepest sympathy from all of our family,
Jerry, Marilyn, Eric and Brian Atkins
Tracy, we were so sorry to read of your father's passing. Our prayers and sympathy for you and your family.
I have loved my dad forever and he was the best dad in the world! I will never forget him and will always know the values that he taught me and the life lessons and I will always relish the friendship and love that he gave to my mom and to our family and the love that he showed to Monty and Jessica. I will always love you dad! Please keep watch over mom and Tom and Travis and all loved ones who have passed and I will think of you daily. I love you dad...Love Connie or
Tonnie as you called me
My children, Amy and Joel Bruss, went through Robert Lucas and loved Mr Tvedte. He was a wonderful person and will be missed.
I remember walking down the hallway at school in the morning and having Mr. Tvedte say good morning to all of us. My mother Sondra Schnoebelen worked as a lunch lady at Lucas for a few years. Then she moved over to Horace Mann as the Secretary.(Sondra passed away this past Oct.) But she always kept in touch with Don. Another memory was at the City HIgh Football games if he saw us he would always say hi and ask by name how everybody in the family was doing! He will be truly missed! .
This man was the first school principal I ever had. Many of you here can say the same. I recall my first visit to Robert Lucas school shortly before I started kindergarten. At that time there was a large portrait of Robert Lucas hanging next to the office. It was a very stern looking Lucas which brought me to ask my mother in a very trembling voice "is..is thaaat the pppprincipal." Naturally when Mr. Tvedte heard that story it brought him a great deal of laughter. And, of course, my mom has never let me forget it, either. Memories of his gentle yet firm leadership will stay with me forever. So to my friend Bill and his family I send my condolences.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. Your dad was a wonderful man, and a great friend to my parents. I know that they are all up in Heaven now, telling stories of the big ones that got away, or the big ones that they caught! He will be forever in my thoughts! Love to you all.
Mr. Tvedte was principal at Robert Lucas when I moved to town in 1969 and started fifth grade. I was a scared little girl going to a new school and one thing that always comforted me in those early days was seeing Mr. Tvedte in the halls. He was such a sweet man and had such a calm demeanor...that was just what I needed. Educators are very special people because they influence their students in so many ways (and I'm not saying that because my dad was a teacher). I have always carried such fond memories of Mr. Tvedte and I can say that about only a handful of teachers and administrators I encountered throughout school.
I was sorry to hear of the passing of your father.
May the continued prayers of your friends and family give you comfort during this sorrowful time.
In Deepest Sympathy
I was a student at Robert Lucas from Fall 1967 (when my family moved to Iowa City) until approximately 1971, when I completed the 6th grade. I remember Mr. Tvedte as a tall, serene figure who radiated kindness. In retrospect, I remember that the teachers on staff displayed no unhappiness. This impression was confirmed when (in the 1970s or 1980s?) nearly every elementary-school principal in the Iowa City School District was transferred to a different school -- except for Mr. Tvedte. The chief administrator's comment at the time was that he was "satisfied with the job that Don Tvedte was doing at Robert Lucas."
Connie, I extend my sympathy to you and your family. I lost my dad this year too, so I share your pain. Ironically, my fathers name was Don too. Diane Downing
Don was a great principal at Lucas. Our sons looked up to him. He was one of the best. Knowing him was our good fortune.
Our deepest sympathy to the Tvedte family. We are so sorry for your loss. May your memories bring you comfort in the days ahead. It is so difficult saying goodbye to those we love. Know that our thoughts & prayers are with you all.

I was acquainted with Don for several years. I did not teach in the building where he was principal, but I knew Don for many years. It seems that his "teachers" with whom he taught were very positive and "loved" him.
My condolences to the Twedt family. Hearing stories about your father from Bev I know he was a wonderful an much loved person. You are all in my thoughts at this time.
Mr. Tvedte was my principal at Lucas Elementary when I was a child. He was a wonderful role model for myself and others while we had him as our principal. He will be missed.
My sincerest sympathy to all of the Tvedte Family. I will forever be grateful to Don for giving me my first opportunity in the educational field. Over the years, he was always so gracious in his support as a colleague and as a friend. What a wonderful man who touched the lives of many!
To the Tvedte family: So sorry for your loss.
To the Tvedte Family: Sorry for your loss. Don was a gentle soul with such a sweet smile. A man of few words but a twinkle in his eye letting you know what he was thinking. My thoughts are with you all in this very difficult time.
My condolences to the Tvedte Family. Don and my father (Clifford Walters) met while teaching in Gruver, IA in 1955. Several years later, Don contacted my father about job openings in the Iowa City School District. My siblings and I are forever grateful to Don for his part in bringing the Walters family to Iowa City. Our family grew and flourished and we could not have grown up in a better place than Iowa City.
