Frank Hsieh-Fu Cheng
1923 - 2013
Condolences
I extend my condolances to Mr. Cheng's family.
Mr. Cheng certainly sounded like a person I should have been honored to know. I do know his daughter, Dr. Tina Conca, who is married to my nepher, Dr. Kenneth Conca.
Mr. Cheng's passing again reminds us of our mortality, and that even the life cycle of the very good must, at last, accept closure.
My thoughts and prayers are extended to Mr. Cheng's family. May their period of mourning be lessened by the thought that Frank Cheng is now in a better place.
My endearing and enduring memory of Frank was when one would see him, typically as he popped into your office, unannounced..."Remember me?" Of course, Frank...I will always remember you! Frank was a vibrant person who enjoyed the many roles he undertook--he made a difference in the lives of so many, me included.
Family of Dr Frank Cheng: Dr Cheng was the first person I saw when a came to Iowa in 1981. Frank told me he was the offical Radiology Department Greeter. And so it was. During the next 30 plus years he would be there to greet and to provide a friendly smile. Frank would take the time and effort to know everyone. I always felt happy in his presence. Dr Cheng- thanks for all your kindnesss and happiness and all your warm words. Frank lives among us all -the official greeter
My deepest condenses to the Cheng family on Frank's passing. In the thirty-some years that I knew him, he was always gracious, kind, truly a gentle soul. He had an avid interest in so many things and was always smiling and positive. I had the pleasure of knowing him through UIHC and also the great fortune to have Margareth as my daughter Dara's kindergarten teacher. I know that Frank will be missed by so many! My thoughts and prayers are with Margareth and daughters.
My condolences to Frank's wife and family. Frank was a loyal friend of the Collage (CLAS) and always in attendance At our Saturday Scholars...filled with curiosity and information to share.
I met Dr. Cheng thru my husband. Dr. Cheng was always such a delightful person. It never failed that wherever, whenever, however we ran across each other, he was always "surprised" that I remembered him. "You my good friend" he would end our conversation with. He was indeed a good friend to me. I will miss seeing you around town Dr. Cheng. Heaven has gained a special angel. You'll always be my friend, Dr. Cheng.
Hello Chengs. So sorry to hear about Dr. Cheng's passing. He was the most kind and happy man I think I have ever know. He ALWAYS had a smile on his face. I would have to say that he was enjoying every minute of his life. What a great man. I would see him from time to time around the UIHC hallways and say hi to him and he always had time to stop and chat. I am sure you are all feeling a great loss today but know that I will always think of him in a fond way. On a childhood memory note - I remember being driven to various events with Pearl (my childhood chum) and it would be her dad's turn to drive and I remember he was not the best driver in the world. I always felt like I had whip lash after riding with him. He made up for this shortcoming with his kindness!! Take care - Cheryl Cullers-Hoard
The many memories I have of Dr. Cheng were about sharing great times with his family and taking pleasures in their fabulous home cooked meals. We would all sit around telling stories about life, laughing our heads off about events in everybody's life that brings a smile, enjoying the company of a wise and "gentle" man. We will miss you!
Dr. Cheng used to come visit me every couple of weeks in the Radiology Library and talk about his research interests, trips to see his children, trips to China, his work in the community and at the hospital, politics, tai chi, tea and pineapple. He was always offering me gift certificates to local chinese food establishments. Dr. Cheng was a kind and generous human being, and I know he touched many lives. He had a young spirit, a sharp mind, and 'til the end nothing slowed him down. I felt honored to be numbered among his friends and will greatly miss him.
Dr.Cheng taught me that learning is a lifelong process. I will miss him and his visits to Nuclear Medicine . He always feined surprise that I still remembered him after the 20 odd years that I had been a student of his in the Nuclear Medicine Technology program.
Frank was a true gentleman. I'm a better person for having known him!
I am so sorry for your familys' loss. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Nancy
Very sorry to receive the news of Dr. Chengs' untimely death. Our family sends our condolences and wishes for comfort for you all.
Mrs. Cheng,
Farewell to Frank Chen
A Friend
1923 - 2013
There is a place so full of Heaven's light
Where at the Gate stands our Lord
As Lady Justice stands on His right
On His left He holds His mighty sword.
Our lives revisited in but a flash of Glory
As the golden scale is held high
We are allowed to see our life's story,
And to look back to days gone by.
This day into His presence comes Frank Chen
He is greeted by his life long Friend.
Welcome home on this Judgment day,
Fear not this is the beginning, not the end.
His shape transformed back to his youth
Kneeling he answers the Trumpet's call,
With sword raised he hears the Truth
A be knighted Frank stands straight and tall.
It was a privilege and honor to know Frank
His gentlemanly way and kind smiling face
I feel that if he could he would say,
It is not the winning in life, it's the race.

So sorry to hear of Frank's passing. He will be missed by many and the community. You have our sincere sympathy.
I don't recall exactly how it was that I first met Frank but, he was one of the first faculty members I met when I joined the U of I Faculty in 1971. Later when I became chair of the Department of Exercise Science, Frank would periodically drop in and shoot the breeze a few minutes. These were some of the most enjoyable times I had during my years on board. Frank was not only a brilliant scholar in his own area, but he was an excellent nutritionist and a promoter of exercise. He participated in Tai Chi all his life and was a strong advocate of exercise in general.. After I retired in 2009-10, I would occasionally run into Frank in a McDonald restaurant at noon hour. He would always sit down awhile and we would talk over the good old days. If everybody had the personality and thoughtfulness of Frank, there would be far fewer problems in the world today.
He will be greatly missed but in our memories forever.SSDtd
Mr. Cheng must have been a remarkable man, because he raised a remarkable daughter in our United Way colleague, Pearl. I'm so sorry for the family's loss, but so grateful for the family's legacy and the impact that Pearl has on our community.
I met Mr. Hsieh-Fu Cheng in the beginning of 2013; very recently. I met him at several of the Chamber lunches on Mondays. He impressed me as a kind, thoughtful, sharp, quality individual.
Was so sorry to hear of Fran's passing. My daughter and I so enoyed his visits when we had the clothing and crystial store at the mall. He always tried to greet every one at church also. Every one will miss him, espesialy his family. God Bless!
I was so saddened to hear of Frank's passing. He was, indeed, "a gentleman and a scholar".
Frank was one of my very favorite people in this world. Your loss is also mine. I will miss him every time we of the Iowa City/Coralville Chinese community gather. Though I cannot be with you tomorrow for the memorial service, my thoughts are and will remain with you always. Requiescat in pace.
Frank was, by far, the strongest advocate we have ever had for CHAMPS. He will be sorely missed. My deepest and sincerest sympathies are for his family. My heart aches.
Sincerely,
Patti Lounsbury
My consolation to you all during this time of sorrow. May your many memories sustain you.
Cheng family:
You can tell a lot about a person by the values they instill in their children and then found again in their childrens' children.
We were saddened to learn of Frank's passing. Frank always asked about Jason, and vice versa. We have known Frank for 26 years, both through Radiology and the Triangle Cub. It will seem that something is missing when Frank is no longer at meetings. Our fondest memory is of Frank telling about his first job in Shanghai, working on a formula for Scotch. We know that Frank was very proud of his family and loved the members dearly. Unfortunately we are in Canada at the moment and so cannot attend the service. Please accept our deepest condolences. Frank will be deeply missed. Barbara, Axel and Jason
To Dr. Cheng's family,
I knew Dr. Cheng as a frequent visitor to our Allergy Div at UIHC. He was a colleague of Dr. Hal Richerson who was my "boss". Even after Dr. Richerson retired I would see Dr. Cheng frequently and he always remembered me and asked to be remembered to Dr. Richerson. I retired last year so no longer saw his happy face. He will be missed greatly-my condolences.

Dear Margareth,
It is with deep sadness that Carolyn and I read of Frank's passing in today's newspaper. Please accept our deepest sympathy on your and your family's loss. The city of Coralville and The University of Iowa have lost their number one fan and ambassador of good will. To meet Frank for the first time was to like him for all time. He had a way of bringing out the joy in everyone he met. Frank will be remembered fondly by everyone. May his memory be eternal.

Dear Mrs. Cheng, Tina, Pearl and Teresa:
My father and I were so sorry to learn of Dr. Cheng's passing. I will always remember the wonderful time we had at Ken and Tina's wedding, and more recently during your visits to Maryalnd. The children at my school will be remembering Dr. Cheng in prayer. Doreen
So sorry to hear about Dr. Cheng. I know he will be greatly missed by his family, friends and colleagues. I was friends with Teresa beginning in elementary school. I remember going to her house and her dad was always so hospitable. What I remember most though was his smile and his kindness. My prayers are with you!
Dear Mrs. Cheng and family, I am so sorry to hear about Frank. I had the pleasure of knowing him through the chamber. He was such a wonderful, kind and respected man. He was so proud of his family and community. He made everyone he would meet feel welcomed and loved. Please know that he will be missed and you are all being thought of during this difficult time.
Dr. Frank Cheng is a gentleman and scholar whose optimism and energetic support of humanity will be greatly missed by all his family, friends, and colleagues. Frank has been a great mentor and friend to me for more than 30 years as well as being one of the greatest supporters of our joint academic programs in the Free Radical and Radiation Biology program at the University of Iowa. His enthusiastic attendance at all our program events, spreading friendship and wisdom to generations of faculty, students, and family friends was a huge positive influence that will be long remembered and cherished. Frank loved to contribute not only wisdom but also great food to these events and the attendees always appreciated the egg rolls and Chinese delicacies that he would bring to the festivities. Frank also had an infectious love and interest in science for his entire life and called me just last week to discuss his newest ideas on cancer biology and how to facilitate the translation of exciting new laboratory results and ideas into clinical practice. I will forever cherish and honor his memory and contributions to enriching my life. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and children during this time of sadness, while also remebering that we all will carry a piece of Frank's uplifting philosophy with us for the rest of our lives.
I had the pleasure of Frank's acquaintance for many, many years and was sad to learn of his passing. He had such a positive personality, always greeting you with a smile and genuinely happy to see you again. He had such a joy of living his life. I shall very much miss seeing him again.
My condolences to his wife and children.
I will miss seeing Dr. Cheng's smiling face around UIHC and Iowa City. He always had a story to tell about his many activities and travels. He was a shining example of what it is like to live life fully. Thank you Dr. Cheng for always being a beacon of light.
Frank has given us an extraordinary example of a life well-lived. His endlessly effervescent personality never failed to bring joy and love into the lives of all the people and projects he touched. I know that he will be missed by all as I myself will miss him.
