Obituary of Florence M. Fuhrmeister
Florence M. Fuhrmeister, 97, formerly of rural North Liberty died Friday, August 09, 2013, after a lengthy illness at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with a time of visitation and fellowship immediately following. Family graveside services will take place at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. Memorial contributions can be made to the Florence Fuhrmeister Memorial Fund.
Florence Mary Martin was born July 26, 1916, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; daughter of Eliphalet Bootman Martin and Wihelmina Christina (Krueger) Martin. She graduated from Washington Senior High School in Cedar Rapids in January of 1935. That same year she attended the Cedar Rapids Business College, graduating in June of 1935.
Florence worked for the Iowa Electric Light and Power Company in Cedar Rapids for seven years. On May 26, 1941, she married Lorence M. Furhmeister of North Liberty. For many years they farmed together northwest of North Liberty. Florence returned to the workforce in 1956 at Proctor and Gamble in Iowa City; working there for 24 years until her retirement in 1980.
She was an avid reader, and always had a book with her. She spent many hours in summer picking and freezing strawberries, cherries, and grapes and making apple pies made from the apples off of their own trees.
Her family includes her children, Eric of rural North Liberty, Iowa and Christine Christian and her husband, Roger of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Sarah Baxter (Sidney) of San Francisco and David Christian of Iowa City.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and her Aunt Augusta Krueger who raised Florence after the death of her parents.
