Obituary of Jean Ann Funk
Jean Ann Kuehl Funk, beloved wife and mother, died March 28, 2014, at the Oaknoll Health Center, after a long Illness. She was 88 years old.
A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at 2pm in the Recreation Room at Oaknoll Retirement Center in Iowa City. The daughter of Frank and Eva Kuehl of Waukee, IA, Jean Funk was born in 1926 and grew up on a farm west of Des Moines. She attended The University of Iowa College of Nursing where she met the handsome young cardiology resident, Dr. David C. Funk. The couple were married in 1947 and made their home in Iowa City, where David was a physician at the UI Medical Center and the VA Hospital.
Jean loved books, and when her children were grown, she worked at the West High School Library, and was a volunteer librarian for St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and UI Hospital. She was an avid gardener and led an active life, canoeing, camping and cross-country skiing, and, with her husband, swam on the UI Masters Swim Team, winning gold medals in the Iowa Senior Olympics.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by her sister, Miriam Arneson, of Minneapolis MN, her sons David B Funk of Iowa City and Robert J Funk of Austin TX, daughters Nancy L Funk of Berkeley, CA, and Sarah E Funk, of Seattle, WA, six grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
