Obituary of Oscar E. Graham
Oscar E. Graham, 95, of Iowa City died Monday, September 2, 2013, at his home.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Friday, September 6th at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with visitation from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will be at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Oscar's memory to Iowa City Hospice.
Oscar was born January 7, 1918, in rural Union Township of Johnson County, Iowa; the son of William and Mary (Porkorny) Graham. He attended Bales Country School in in rural Johnson County through the eighth grade. When old enough, he enlisted in the United States Army during WWII serving in the Military Police. Oscar married Mildred O. Banks on November 6, 1943 in Williamsport, PA. Following the war the couple returned to Iowa City where he worked in the Public Safety Division of the University of Iowa for many years, retiring as captain in February of 1983. He was a member of the American Legion, the Iowa Peace Officers Association with the honor of being its oldest living member.
His family includes 3 grandchildren, Patricia Payne, Donald Graham and Rachel Graham all of the Iowa City area, and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mildred, son, Gary; 2 sisters, and 4 brothers.
